Browser wars
« on: June 25, 2012, 06:08:19 pm »
A couple of posts got me thinking about the state of play now, found this which I found quite interesting.

http://royal.pingdom.com/2012/04/23/current-status-of-the-browser-wars/

I just thought I would start another thread so that other topic doesn't go too far off topic.

Looks like IE's days are numbered.  I hope they pull their finger out. But what can you expect with past experience, people are voting with their fingers it seems.  I think one of their problems is such infrequent updates, but that's another ball of string.

For me the top 3 browsers, IE, Chrome and Firefox all have their problems, you don’t really notice many of them until you make sites that have to display in all of them. Then you start to find their limitations.

The end user doesn’t really get to notice that fact, how do they know what the site looks like on another browser unless they actually try another browser. Maybe that dead link might work on another browser? or maybe the site maker took longer over the site to make it display across browsers, none are perfect.

So to all browser makers.

Can we please just stick to one standard that fits all and can that standard take the best bits from all browsers and chuck out the bad.

Thank You.

Looks like IE's days are numbered.
You are trying to wind me up aren’t you Freddy  ;D

It’s still firmly in the top 3, it has some very nice options for making sites look smarter, options that Chrome and FF can’t do. IE 10 will be out soon, I will be using it  :D its going to have improved HTML5 and hardware acceleration, and there is one other little point but quite important, IE is the only browser that has a full 64bit version, something that the people who did that survey forgot to mention, with a 64bit OS why should I be forced to run an old 32bit browsers. Come on FF and Chrome catch up  :knuppel2:

Damn you found me out  ;D

Yeah they all have problems, just some have more problems than others *cough*.

I use IE still though for some things.  Like that article said though, it's glory days are well behind it.  Hey at least it's not IE6 still... :)

I came across a site today that MS are pushing - it's a kind of graphical story.  It seems quite interesting but they made it so some features were only able to be used in IE.  This is MS... it speaks to me of how wrong their current browser thinking is.  Limit it to just IE ? That's going backwards and frankly seems a bit like desperation.

Firefox I use too for the Firebug debugger, although mostly I do all that in Chrome.

64 bit is fine I agree.  I do have to say though, that I don't think I would see much difference in reality, Chrome is really snappy here, even more so since the SSD went in.  The only thing that really slows things down is the server itself these days.

It's interesting about the developers versus end users thing.  IE has a dodgy past and I bet a lot of developers still regard it with some hatred for all the hassle it caused them.  That's baggage they could do with out, they will have to do a lot of cool stuff to shed that heritage.

Yes developers, I can’t help but think Chrome has had an easy ride there in some ways, it is new to the whole browser thing, by the time it came out standards had mostly been set so all it had to do was follow them.

Think back to the early days of browsers, MS in particular were trying to add new features that the end user would enjoy using and I applaud them for that, maybe alone the way they got a bit lost but haven’t we all?

The web is still in flux, dynamic, I would rather have new toys to play with than be stuck using the same old standard year after year.

Yep, Chrome is the new kid still isn't it really.  It's ticking a lot of the right boxes it seems though.  I don't underestimate the challenge they had in bringing it to where it is though.  Like you say web tech is constantly in flux, so whenever they jump in there's still plenty to account for.

And of course, IE was a pioneer product in so many ways, it helped get us to where we are today.

It's good they have more rivals now (thinking back to Netscape), hopefully it will spur them on to be innovative.

BTW, here's that site I was talking about.  Ironically it was on YouTube, which we know is owned by Google.
