Thx FD...but actually meant only the important ones (ie secrity etc) but

JEESH

Thas a lot of extensions that need downloading that both IE and opera come with as pretty much sytandard things...WOW

On FF...there are no windows open yet when i tyr to open a page its telling me its already running and to either reboot or close old application ???..interesting one..

And AVANT...doesnt want to show the internet time hehe...seems after all this that IE may still be the most reliable and complete browser still ??

Will keep reporting my findings  :afro

I think a lot of the FF extensions should have been bulit into FF in the first place. Anyway, the security ones I like are the NoScript extension as it let's you control JavaScript better. Other than that, it seems secure enough.

I admit that when designing sites, sometimes things look fine in one browser but are all messed up in another. Plus FF still doesn't handle CSS the way it should, IMHO.

I've used firefox in the past, had a lot of add ons that I added and seemed a bit faster than IE, I tried to switch back to it receintly but the newer version didn't work so I stayed with IE. I'm about due to reformat and reinstall win 98 on this computer and have been thinking of saving my temp internet files on drive d and reinstalling on drive c after the install.  The P4 was on the internet 3 minutes and picked up at least 3 files that are malware, not in the viruse potection yet.
Linux Suse needs drivers for Raid, I installed it on a small older drive, so far I it can't mount a floppy to uncompress the tar raid driver, I don't know how to get it to connect to a server. Makes you realize what your paying for when you buy windows.
Also is anyone familiar with MegaHal, I tried down loading him some time ago, .tar must be the compressed linux, nice.

I think MegaHal was a somewhat older program written by Jason Hutchins from Australia (I believe).
It was kinda strange at first and needed a lot of corrections. Whether it "learned" was hard to tell.

I D/L'd it many years ago although I think I've seen it on some of the AI sites for D/L.

Well just to add my latest reports.

Avant is well pretty uselss in a lot of areas.

FFS...or FF lol...( pm me if you dont know what ffs means hehe) is also causing me more headaches than its supposed to fix...another no goer im afraid.

Opera...well I like it, so easy to use, nicely laid out...very very quick...but again like avant, is useless in many areas also.

So to sum up...

ff...some nice features but way too time consuming dl extras that the other browsers come with as standard equipment (why buy a car at 10k when its competitor for 10k comes with a load of goodies at no extra cost ???

Opera...lovely to use and nice looking...but lacking many useful features.

Avant...considering it uses many IE related settings no better than of the above.

So..

I hate to say it but Big Bill "devil" Gates still has the browser market wrapped up for me. IE despite its many many faults to me is still the most complete and stable browser out there.

I know ppl are bound to dissagree with me, this is just purely my opinion after using all 4 for a month every day and in now way should ppl be swayed by this. This is a forum after all where we can express our opinions, so please feel free to coment and or try em for yourself  :afro

I used to use Netscape many moons ago but went with IE instead. Tried Opera which seemed fine until the company decided that they wanted to sell their browser that was mediocre at best.

One browser (free) that has a lot of nice features like tabbed browser, channels, photomail, messenger, skins and a lot more is called PhaseOut.

Available from www.phaseout.net

It was very interesting to read about the browsers. Personally I use Firefox with some extensions and I've been using it since Januari 2006. I have only been hijacked one time, but all i needed to do was to close the browser and then start it again to get rid of the hijacker. If you get hijacked in IE then you can say goodbye to your system, unless you know exactly what file is beeing hijacked and know how to fix it. IE is integrated into the Windows system and I found that uninstalling it and remove the folder and then installing it didn't remove the hijack. I've helped at least two people by fixing their system because their IE have been hijacked. Needed to format the harddrive and reinstall everything. So I only use IE when it's absolutely necessary because I need to access a site wich doesn't support Firefox. I have had a few crashes with firefox and allways when I've been to this site and close my browser, it will still be running in the background and prevent me from opening it again. I have to close it first via Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Also i found there are some other problems when browsing this site. Sometimes it just hangs when clicking on a link, and today when i tried to upload my own avatar it hanged and then i couldn't access the site again. Had to restart my computer. Also I found that when I was browsing through the available avatars I just got a popup from my firewall that an internet attack has been blocked. That rarely happens to me, so I wonder if there might be some hacker activity going on on this site. :undecided

Yes we have been working on improving support for Firefox.

I made an alteration to the way links are handled, I noticed one of the settings was incorrect.

Sometimes it hangs for a while for me too, it may just be during busy periods - or perhaps one of the java scripts running.  I'm not sure how well Java is handled by Firefox.  I have read the Java machine from www.java.com is more secure and stable than the MS version though.

We don't have anything that really indicates Hackers - sometimes that kind of warning can be generated by innocent code though, but we will keep a look out.

I've noticed a lag from time to time depending on when I access. There is also the fact that the site is about a quarter of the way around the world so I don't expect a perfectly fast transmission all the time.

As for hijacking, I use a hardware firewall along with a software one. I also keep IE updated with the latest security patches from MS. Lastly, I use a variety of programs that routinely scan my system for malware, trojans, spyware, virii and so forth.

My hardwire firewall can also keep track of individual "attacks" to my system and email me to that fact. There were so many that I turned that feature off some time ago and am content to just let it do it's thing of protecting me without notification.

There is no, one do it all system regarding security. It is the result of several items working together toward a common goal. Firewall, scanning, common sense on which sites to stay away from, etc.
