News posts on the front page...
« on: February 11, 2011, 06:15:55 pm »
Ok, I gotta ask this one. The news posts on the front home page, seem to be aggregations.  Not sure whether they are something like RSS feeds, or perhaps someone "fetching" the news. What I didn't see was a place to comment on those that fall outside the scope of the site's stated theme. (yeah, I know how that sets up to suggest an answer)

But if you are going to put out news posts on the home page to suggest what is within side as an attraction, shouldn't you be able to comment on some of them? Articles that deal with the copyfight, I've followed for years. Don't say I agree with them because the entrenched industries have altered the laws on copyright/patent to where they aren't recognizable to what they were intended for.

As example in the above statement, is the length of copyright protection, 75 years for an individual or 95 years for an industry, recording copyright, or corporation. The original length was 14 years. Why should the family of  an author as example be able to collect on the royalties for the remaining time? They didn't write the work so the license of copyright should not pass on beyond the original holder.

Have you ever considered that near nothing you hear or see in your lifetime that is copyrighted will ever be public domain while you live?

My point in all this above is to demonstrate that there are valid posts that can be made on the topic and they can make you think about it.

However, without a place to comment you'll never hear something that could make you scratch your head and wonder how crazy our world has become while industry changes the laws to something you don't recognize for their own self interest.

It's a simple RSS feed from the BBC, covering technology issues that often interest members but not limited to AI.  I used to change the RSS feed sometimes, but it kind of settled on that one as it seems to have things that we talk about more often.

Regarding comments on those articles, I don't really have time to do that kind of thing at the moment and it would be a fairly long job.

However what I usually do if I spot something interesting is to just mention it in the General chat board (this one).  Kinda like :

"Spotted so and so in the news feed....quite interesting....what do people think....blah blah...."

We don't hold a history of the RSS feed, it's updated every 6 hours or so if something is new.  I don't think commenting on them on the home page is really going to achieve much really, I think it's better to just discuss them in the forum where it will remain for as long as we keep this site alive.

But yeah, 'General Chat' at the top of the forum means just that, off topic and whatever you want. :)

Noted and suspected that it was something of the sort. Still you'll pardon if I had to ask. *smiles*

Have spotted some from time to time that could have made a decent comment on. Again, not sure that it would fit the forum's stated interests so that was the reason for posting the question.

I'm sure I'll have other questions from time to time to ask. Mind that I am not seeking to change the direction of the forum. I joined you guys, not the other way around and am easy in that sense.

Nothing on the internet is written in stone. It's all subject to where and when the electrons show up and in what flavor.

Thanks for the response.

No problem at all about asking, feedback and suggestions are always encouraged.  We're pretty relaxed around here about what can be talked about.  Over the past five years plus, we have discussed a lot of different things, we're not strict by any means.

We do have the common interest of AI of course, but we're all friends here so the main thing is that people enjoy the content and want to chat and that seems to be working.  So welcome to the family :)
