Game
« on: November 06, 2010, 11:15:27 pm »
While / whilst looking for something new (to me) in the way of Freeware First Person Shooters - Single Player, I happened across a really well done game called Nexuiz (don't ask me for the pronunciation).

I run it on a Win 7 64bit quad with no problems and I'm sure it runs on Vista. Can't say for sure about XP but the site should have info on that.

It features single and multi-player modes and it is a really nicely done shoot-em-up! Fast paced, great effects and smooth graphics along with a great frame rate. There are times I wish I could slow it down a bit. You will definitely have to watch your backside and do not pause to catch your breath or your wits because I guarantee, you'll lose them both!!

http://alientrap.org/nexuiz/

There are also tons of maps and skins available. For a free game, this one is really hard to beat!! Pun ON...Pun OFF!

I decided to give it a try, so I'm downloading it as I type. Nearly 1GB file size! (888MB) - That's gonna take a while. ;D

I'll let you know how it runs on an XP box, and give my opinions/impressions once I get it installed, and get in some game time. Thanks, Art!

Well, I've given it a try, and I think I'll keep it. IMO, it's almost(but not quite) on par with Q3 Arena, and a lot better than Open Arena (http://www.openarena.ws/). I still play Q3 a lot, mostly using mods like Excessive+ 2.1, or Seeker, but Nexuiz seems to be a lot of fun, so I'll play it from time to time, as well. :) Great find, Art! Thanks again! ;D

Of all of the PC driving games I've played, none have really thrilled me all that much. Either the physics were off enough to make the game too "cartoonish", or the controls were too klunky, or there was just... "something" that didn't quite feel right. I quess I'm also somewhat spoiled by the old PS games GT2/3/4. The bad thing is, I no longer have access to a PS2. :( I still have my garage on a memory card, though. ;D

Of course, I haven't played a driving/racing sim in several years, so I don't know what the more modern offerings are like, but...

I used to like FPS that also involved a bit of tactics and stealth or camping out. The old Delta Force was a perfect example. Single player and taking a long shot, sneaking into an enemy camp, taking out a convoy...
Ahh...those were the days!

Squiekk...excuse me...I think my rocking chair has a loose joint...Where's that glue?

I guess its fair to say driving games have moved on a little, like most things, the main attraction might be the multiplayer options in the games though, it can be quite rewarding to win a race against people instead of racing the Ai bots, so I’ve been told.

I would like to see some kind of slow moving horror game, set in an old castle, with puzzles to crack, problems to solve, the odd ghost maybe to kill but that’s not as important and the spooky feeling in the place.

Play it late at night in a dark room. Perfect   :o

Art the Squiekk of your rocking chair would add nicely to ambiance.  ;D

Data, have you ever played the Silent Hill games ?  They're pretty freaky and dark.  And some of the monsters are really gruesome  :D

A couple of lifetimes ago, I wrote one of the few (at the time) adventure games and unlike a lot of the text driven ones, mine was a totally graphic adventure hybrid.

Text was used to give commands but the simulation basically (no pun) placed you inside an old house. You were free to move about using N,S,E,W directions and it used the common Subject / Verb commands like Open Door or Get Coins. If you said to Get Coins then they would cause a very fast overlay of a Get/Put command to remove the appearance of the coins from the table and same for most other objects in the sim.

It wasn't quite polished enough for prime time but a lot of my friends enjoyed playing it to see if they could avoid my traps and think like a madman (uhh...that would have been me!). :D

There was an early Egyptian adventure that used extremely nice graphics and in order to travel from one room to another, one had to solve a riddle or puzzle and they seemed to get progressively more difficult with each room. I'd love to visit that one again as I never had time to solve it. Life got in the way!  ;)

Ahh...yes.. those lovely 1200 baud modems...those were the days!! DOH!!! :o ;D ::)

Art, I have a very simple Javascript/CSS game that I wrote on my website (http://www.geekcavecreations.com/trapped2/) that sounds very similar to the game you described. It's still very much a "work in progress", but it's playable as-is; it only lacks the option of multiple difficulty levels, and random item/trap placement to make it complete, so once you know where all the items and traps are, it ceases to be as fun. Some day I plan on making it more challenging.

Just got another game “Lost Horizon” it’s a slow moving point and click type game, solving puzzles, what grabbed me was you play as Fenton Paddock, he’s a cad, a ladies man, it made me chuckle when I played the Demo.

Downloaded the demo and the game from Steam.
