Hehe, unfortunate. You could see that he has 'blakeys' on his boots - these are basically metal studs. We used to use them when we were cadets. They can be slippery.

I thought those small horseshoe shaped objects on the bottom of his heels were simply "taps", sometimes worn on the toe of the boot as well. Their primary reason was to Sound off the steps as well as helping to protect the sole and heel from excessive wear.
