Got a new toy.
« on: November 06, 2006, 10:18:49 pm »
Grabbed myself a bargain video capture card on ebay last week and now want to try out some experiments getting my pc (ai eventually) to recognise different objects.

I think I can use the movement sensing software available to spot when I move around - might be fun, but I like the idea of showing it objects that it can compare to previous stored images and then have it say what they are.  If it doesn't recognise them then it would store a new image - kind of like teaching it english but with images instead.

Anyone came across anything like this on their travels on the net ?

Yes, about a year or so ago I downloaded a demo of a face rec program and I think it might have been called facerec or face-it (but I think Face-it has gone under another company name - possibly merged).

The webcam would see an object. You type in the object's name. Repeat until several objects were in it's database.

Hold up any of the aforementioned items and the program would then be able to identify each of them.

As I mentioned, it was a demo but it did work quite well.

I think I found a lot of them by trying different search topics in Google like: Freeware webcam software, Shareware webcam software, webcam vision, facial recognition, etc., you get the drift....

With all the tech advances I'm sure there's far better programs available at this time.

We'll keep our eyes peeled!!

OK...

Had to eat first but then I entered into google: "webcam vision software"
It displayed 2,210,000 hits!

Of these, I searched several links and found some rather new and promising ones.

They are as follows:

http://www.roborealm.com/
(quite promising but don't download from this site as they require your email before downloading and we know what kind of misery that can cause!)

http://www.roborealm.com/links/vision_software.php
(Same basic site but offering more in the way of webcam software products)

http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/Misc__Graphics_Tools/Robotic_Machine_Vision_Software.html
(HERE'S the one to download from!!)

http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best/free-webcam-fun.html
(More webcam stuff to explore)

http://www.programurl.com/software/vision.htm
(look for Image Lab and Vision ++)

http://www.mathtools.net/C_C__/Image_Processing/
(Open Source Vision Library and others)

http://www.soft32.com/search/6-0-6.html?new=yes&search=webcam%20video
(more webcam stuff than you could want!)

Are you stuffed yet? Hope this helps! :afro

This is cool! The program Art had mentioned, Nick (http://www.digitalgirl.co.uk/dgforum/index.php?topic=712.0) also does use a video cam to learn from. In fact, I've just been welcomed on the development team and am in contact with Nick's programmer. :) I'll post more on that in Art's topic.

I have heard that Spydaz over on Zabaware forums had some kind of video recognition project started with Hal. That might be interesting as well.

There is a Visual Basic 6 Face/Object recognition program out there somewhere but I don't have the link handy. It's also said to be quite slow.

For those who don't like giving out your email, try TrashMail.com - it gives you a temporary expring email address (you can even set the expiration on it) just for software downloads, access to protected articles, what have you. :)
