Well since I removed QuickTime the error has not come up again...

Got the new hard drive now, so will sort all that out at some point.  Wondering if I will have to call Micro$oft or whether it will just let me do it.

It will work I reckon, no need to contact MS.
Remove the HDD with Windows on, keep as a backup just in case.
Install Windows onto new HDD, if the install goes well, which I think it will, don’t boot from the old HDD again, or don’t boot if connected to the internet at least 

Have reinstalled Windows 7 on a PC before and it worked fine, just had to activate it over the web.

So Freddy, have you done your windows install yet?

No my friend, I just haven't had the time yet.  I haven't even opened the box.  Mostly because I have to do a lot of reading for my course which ends mid December, so that's my priority at the moment.  I'll need a couple of clear hours to do all the installing and reinstalling, so maybe at the weekend.
