Having fixed parts to your machine isnt a huge weakness,  because animals also have such things.

we have 2 eyes,  only so many arms and legs,  a fixed amount of motor in/out.    so when you taste an orange, its always going to be an orange.

The combination of fixed sensory inputs and motor outputs, with free cognitive mechanisms seems good to me. It would definitely be convenient to have fixed methods of perception and locomotion because it would take time to learn how to interpret/operate them. The thinking on the other hand, should be as free as possible because the AGI might find itself in a wide range of environments which it's creators couldn't have anticipated.
