Arthur C. Clarke and his visions
« on: February 07, 2015, 04:33:12 pm »
An interesting interview from almost 40 years ago with one of the most prolific sci-fi writers and visionaries of his time.
He describes things that haven't happened then like video phones, Internet, eBooks, mobile phones (cell phones), etc.

Arthur was very astute and quite the futurist, for many of his ideas and dreams of the future came true.

He basically predicted the internet along with Skype, PDF and so on. But he couldn't have known that his 'perfect communication device' would weaken the relationships between people - the opposite of the device's purpose. But either way an astonishing mind.

I really wonder what the future brings in terms of human relations. Technology could be predicted, but not it's impact on our society.

Funny but in the large downtown offices that I am sometimes forced to frequent due to my job, I see people one pod apart from each other sending an email to that other person, some 6 feet away!!

When I initially inquired about this I was told, they do that to cover their a$$es. That way they have a copy and if needed a hard printed copy as well, just in case the other person said, So and so never told me about that widget! Shame!

Other people have been seen walking mindlessly along a sidewalk and bang into streetlight poles, signs, other people and even stepping into moving traffic while intently gazing or texting their friend on their "smart phones". Phones smart - people dumb"!

It's only getting worse. Kids don't have to know math, just how to use a calculator or ask their smart phone! Alright class, let's do a test to see who has the fastest, smartest phone. OK...ready...?

I can't say Facebook isn't rewarding - I get to follow the latest news on at least 20-30 pages and groups I like, even if I am not interested currently in reading. I might have came to contact a friend or colleague, but in the meantime I still get learn about some new cool things. And this does not bug me, however I barely use the 3G on my phone - when I am outside I only go 'online' to see when my next bus is.

So if I ever owned a cafe, I would definitely add a Wifi, 3G, 4G jammer however I am afraid I won't have any customers to 'jam' in that case.

A couple other sites I simply have to visit is YouTube and a more recent find called, Chonday. It has a lot of interesting, inspiring, funny, touching, humorous and sometimes in-your-face videos that make you say Yeah! That's great!

Worth a check at least once a week for new entries.

Yeah, Wi-Fi is practically everywhere so there is little need for a hotspot device unless outside of town somewhere.
