Isolated sleep paralysis
« on: January 21, 2012, 08:37:12 pm »
An off-topic. Since some days I'm in trouble with sleep. Many times the symptoms I.S.P.
I can, to put this post on Aidreams. This issue affects people in perfect health. The young to adult, are concerned.
It's quite annoying for everyday life. I have obtained information, specifically in France, and the English website of Medicine.
I think all people have had this problem one day.
The earlier mastered the phenomenon, before it triggers in sleep. It's good to know. This is not dangerous. I.S.P. corresponds to a category of dreams. I.S.P. is paralysis, which lasts 2 minutes. It's a dream alone. Specifically, a dream, not a light sleep.
Here are examples, perhaps you can find within yourself the symptoms described. So far, I did not know what it was. Now I know. But it's important for everyone to know this. Because it can happen to everyone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Isolated sleep paralysis

Isolated sleep paralysis is a type of paralysis that occurs with a sleep disorder. Sleep paralysis is the inability to perform voluntary muscle movements during sleep.

Causes
Isolated sleep paralysis is more likely to happen during the first two hours of sleep. Not getting enough sleep or sleeping on the back may cause more frequent episodes.

Though this condition may occur with narcolepsy, many people who do not have narcolepsy have isolated sleep paralysis. It is common in adults and is also seen in children.

Most people with isolated sleep paralysis do not have any mental health problems. However, these episodes seem to occur more often in people with:

Anxiety disorders
Bipolar illness
Depression
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Rarely, it runs in families.

Symptoms
People with isolated sleep paralysis have episodes that last from a few seconds to 1 or 2 minutes in which they are unable to move or speak.

These spells end on their own or when the person is touched or moved.
Rarely, the person may have dream-like sensations or hallucinations, which may be scary to them.
Exams and Tests
If you do not have other symptoms of narcolepsy, there is usually no need to perform sleep studies.

Alternative Names
Sleep paralysis - isolated

The Causes of Sleep Paralysis

What causes sleep paralysis? To answer this question it's necessary for you to know a bit about REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, the stage of sleep where most of your dreams occur. Every night during REM sleep the body shuts down virtually all muscle activity to prevent you from acting out those dreams. Your brain is extraordinarily active as you dream, as you might be able to imagine if you think about the complex environments and actions it is conjuring. The only thing that prevents your body from moving to carry out the scene your brain is living is a mechanism that kicks in to paralyze it.

This mechanism is referred to as REM atonia, or REM sleep paralysis. Very rarely, this mechanism can malfunction in some people with a condition that's quite the opposite of ASP known as REM sleep behavior disorder (or RBD). People with RBD often thrash around (or even walk and sometimes even drive!) in a manner that corresponds with what's happening in their dream world. In other words, they act out their dreams, because the paralysis that should be there during the dream is not

I used to get sleep paralysis a lot a few years back.  I occasionally get it now.  I am dreaming and find I cannot move and it is very upsetting.  Sometimes I feel like there is an evil presence in the room pressing down on my chest.  They used to call this 'The Old Hag' as that's kind of like what it feels like.  I have learnt to wake myself up when it occurs now.  Somehow I can sense it and just tell myself to wake up.  Can't really explain how it's done but it works.

Freddy is exactly the same thing for me. The second time, the ISP has come, I plan to put my walkman, I was so afraid it back. But this, always starts the same way. First, a big buzz in the ears, I think I was half asleep. Then a slight ringing in the ear. Following that, the true ambient noise in the room fades. A feeling of paralysis, complete, and I feel that my coverage significantly raised, is a strong feeling that a (phantom), pushes me in the bed, and he wants to take place. It is a large spectrum, it is finally blurred. I remember I cried at that moment, my jaw was completely paralyzed and can not be moved. But a very, very brutal awakening. And my heart, with strong beat. It's very short, but scary. There There's a method to prevent the I.S.P. It is necessary. But it is not dangerous. There's no drugs there, against the I.S.P. In contrast, for drugs, similar to the anti-depressant, is strictly not recommended. Yes, my friend, this problem affects everyone. And what is strange is that this leaves a memory of fear. This is a really strong feeling. However, I can not chased it. I know that the cries, I cried at that moment deep and go suddenly. I faced this kind of hand that pushes me. Finally it's horrible! :o :)

Yes I agree it is one of the worst things I have experienced - it can be terrifying.  And for me too once I have woken up I can still feel the fear.  I only sleep on my side now, mostly it used to happen to me if I had slept on my back, although a few times when I was on my side too - but not so much.

What you need to do is tell yourself that it is not real when you are dreaming - I know that sounds crazy but it works.  You don't wake up immediately, it takes time and you can almost feel your body coming back to life.  It's a trick well worth learning if you can. You need to will yourself to wake up.

I also get dreams a lot where I am falling from great heights and this method can get me out of that too.

We really should not have such bad things happen when we are asleep !

I remember when I first started to experience this was around the year 2000.  This was a time that was very stressful for me.  It is said that stress can bring this on.

I found this : http://paranormal.about.com/od/humanenigmas/a/Old-Hag-Syndrome.htm

I think your description of a phantom is more accurate though.

There is a link at the bottom that gives a scientific explanation.

Yes my friend. It is true that fatigue, or stress, triggers, a 100% problem. Especially has the apprehension or a school exam, or for many other reasons. Yes, the empty feeling I have already done this, it's terrifying. In another apartment, I was also a half-asleep, this time, I heard a male voice, and the sensation of breath in my ears, that,  an voice very dryly "out!" is even anxiety in the morning. The strangest thing is that seven years after my move, the same apartment burned down, was an old building. But strange. I think a half to the phenomenon, supernatural, but that's a strange coincidence.
For I.S.P. You should avoid sleeping on your back, because the problems are even more terrifying, according to the descriptions, the ISP
Thank you very much for the link my friend. I'll check it, it's always interesting to know how the brain works. especially impressive.

Dreams are strange bedfellows (so to speak)! I've had dreams where my feet become entangled
in either thick muck, quagmire or vines, only to wake up and find then tangled in the bed sheets!
(No wonder I couldn't get away from the bad guys!!)  ;)

On the other hand, I love the dreams where I run through a field and leaning forward, almost falling,
I stretch my arms forward to brace myself and suddenly they catch the wind and I'm now flying,
soaring 5, 15, 25, 50 feet above the ground. I can land on the branch of a very large tree and look
around the valley and fields. Leaping off, I soar with ease. Great dream...wish it'd last longer and
replace all those unpleasant ones!! 'Tis life! C'est la vie!

Art, I have good dreams too. I love cars, especially the big car, I drove a plymouth super hard to achieve things in life, and realized in dreams. My friend, you are going to laugh at me! I also dreamed of cake, because I like good things! And have the taste of a good chocolate cake! It's a dream that you do not wish to leave, especially a good cake. ;D ::) :P

This doesn’t sound too good to suffer from, I feel for you Claude and Freddy.

The best dreams I have is when I am dreaming and then in the dream I realise I am dreaming, I become conscious in the dream, then I remember that I can do anything I want in a dream, so far I have walked through walls, it was like walking through jelly and also flown around the skys.

A friend of mine is a healer and a very spiritual person, he explained to me that we can control our dreams by becoming conscious in them and realizing that we can do anything in dream, He calls it “Wake to Dream”.

It doesn’t happen that often for me but when it does it’s never a bad experience.

Datahopa, yes it is true, as I can see. Many theories on sleep. Some premonitory dreams, are in serious situations. Others are a premonition of birth. I think this is characteristic for every situation, or personality. It is never associated with a disease, or active symptoms. But for other cases, the characteristic are more symptomatic. The human study also shows that the brain is an energy, a strong electrical charge, which feeds the life of a human being. It's an energy that always work. :)

I've heard of that before: being able to control your dreams. Must be pretty cool.

Thanks chaps, I don't really have a problem with it since I learnt how to control it.  When it first started happening I really did not want to go to sleep some nights  :o

Sorry Claude and Freddy (I really don't know if I must be sorry, lol). My personal problem (ok, not interesting at all) is that I don't dream anymore. Or I don't remember my dreams. I remember my dreams when I was young, nice dreams or weird dreams or even nightmares.

I have an explanation: maybe I dream BEFORE sleeping. My Second Life is so intense that then, I have no place for dreams in my real sleep.

Just my opinion. I know, not very scientific. But is dreaming an exact science? :)

Bragi yes, it is always a physical exercise, to take control of or own. I think if we have knowledge and experience of our abilities, it is invaluable. This is possible because the theory is shown. :)

Freddy Yes, for myself, the phenomenon recently has been two times in one week I had the impression of being possessed. But this is not the same symptom fortunately! I had the apprehension to sleep then.  :o :)

GT40 Yes, the expression of the dream, is an element of good health. But technically it is translated, for second-life, it is true that in second-life, we Planner in the air, or make it very impractical in real life. O0

GT40: do you perhaps snore or 'move' a lot during sleep. that could be a reason why you don't have dreams anymore. could also be a case of simply not remembering them .
Reminds me of people who have to sleep with a breather (for the snoring, I think). Don't know how to do that!
