New section for software ?
« on: February 18, 2010, 05:17:33 pm »
Building on the conversation elsewhere...I think I will make a new board called 'Software' which will give us a new space to share and talk about that kind of thing.  I'm thinking the Programing and Editing board is sufficient for programming discussion and will keep things relevant.

We do already have the Graphics section which I could reorganise so it concentrates more on finished works and links to graphical work we have been impressed by.  So the whole 'Sound and Vision' category would be more geared towards sharing things we or others have made - it's pretty much already like that anyway.  I'd just pull the software links out of there and put them in the new software section.

The software section can have a miscellaneous section and maybe some child boards supporting different type of software....

So what we would have is a more general software section where we can drop links and discuss things of that nature.  If you want a graphics editor you look in the software section.  If you want to see some nice images you look in the graphics section.

How about that ?

OK. So let me get one thing straight?

You are proposing to re-purpose the Programming and Editing board for general purpose a.i. programming?

If so, then I support that. I'd just find a way to make it known. Others - like I did - might assume that it is merely for the programming and editing of chatbots.

Otherwise I support a software section.

All though how will you reconcile software and questions about software with questions about programming and editing with that software? Will it go in the software section or the programming and editing section?

Good points.

Hmmm...I suppose what we could do is move the Programming and Editing board up into the AI category...that would solve that one - I think rename it just to 'Programming' too.  Then we have a wider ranging area for programming.  There's some things in the existing programming section that would be better being put in the Ultra Hal section....so I could work on that.  I've moved those.

I think it will be down to the poster as to which section best covers their topic.  Posts about programming and editing with that software would probably be best going into the software section if in the simplest case it is about how to use the software.  When it's to do with actual coding then the Programming board would seem best.  There's nothing to stop members linking from one post to another if they feel that would clarify things or provide reference.

In the 'Programming' section we really want to keep to coding, techniques and the real nuts and bolts stuff.  So HTML, Java, Python and programming theory etc etc.

Any more thoughts ?  It's good to have a rethink occasionally so all ideas are welcome.

Somewhere to post links to PC tweaking and benchmarking apps would be good, some of the tools I use can even help you save money on those electric bills.

OK doke,

So we could have the new main category like so :

Software
  • General - Any kind of software useful to us
  • Coding - Editors, programming suites etc
  • Graphics and Video - Blender et al
  • Performance - Benchmarking tools etc

Have some kind of sticky, in each category where we keep a list of links to the software.

You might have already thought of that :D

A thread that stays at the top all the time. I’ve heard them referred to as “sticky”, on this forum they show a pin holding them in.

Don't know if that is an Index, if it is then a new lesson learned  :)

Yes, well any topic can become a sticky but I was imagining a topic that provided an index, kinda like what I have done here :

http://aidreams.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1767.0

But you could also link to topics on this forum...that's why I was thinking 'index'...so you'd have a load of posts in the board and this one sticky topic would index them all.

It may be useful when the boards start to fill up.

Hey Datahopa!

Go a little with those compliments. You see Freddy's head will begin to swell and become
so big that his collar might choke him!
