No end in sight for Vista's Long Goodbye

Seven weeks ago, when we first reported Vista was causing many machines to stall indefinitely while deleting, copying and moving files, we were sure the problem was caused by a bug that would be fixed relatively quickly. After all, Vista is Microsoft's flagship product. It's also an operating system. And everyone knows deleting, copying and moving files are among the most basic tasks any operating system can set out to do.
Now we don't know what to think. Vista's Long Goodbye, as we've come to call this bizarre phenomenon, continues unabated. No amount of diagnosing by the untold number of confounded sysadmins sheds any light on the problem's cause, and Microsoft has yet to acknowledge its full extent.
"I just wanted to say...that I have tried everything...in this section..till yesterday (May 13 2007) and none of it worked," a user who goes by the name SR_1976 posted today in a Microsoft TechNet forum discussing the glitch. "I have tried my best to work with Vista ....did not work...so, gone back to XP...and all my problems are gone. Vista was more stable than XP (for me...)and does have some good features...but enough is enough.." (The discussion, by the way, is the longest TechNet thread we've ever seen.)
Another posting made today relates the experience of a certain groden, who spent four hours trying to copy 3.8GB of data off a Windows 2003 server using a Sony Vaio with 2GB of RAM. It took him a couple of minutes to copy the same files using a similar set up that was running XP.
To recap, an untold number of Vista users are unable to delete, copy and move files without interminable waits, in which the OS appears to be calculating the time the job will take. While most vexing for people working with files on a remote server, the glitch is also present when working with local files. Microsoft issued a hotfix, but it appears it was designed to repair a problem other than the one at hand. Or at least we hope, because it sure hasn't fixed Vista's Long Goodbye.
We asked Microsoft for an interview with a product manager who could shed some light on the difficulty that's vexing so many of the company's most important customers. What we got was an emailed statement that gave no new information. It read:
Finding the root cause of issues like this and identifying a solution is of the utmost priority for Microsoft. That said, crafting a fix and fully testing it - to be sure we are not introducing other problems - takes time. This is why Microsoft makes hot fixes available, and while we understand that hot fixes are not a perfect solution, they can help people get by while we perfect the long term solution. We will keep you updated with specific plans to this issue as soon as we have confirmation.
Microsoft's inability to fix a defect in such a basic feature has led to its share of conspiracy theories that would be quickly dismissed as kooky, were it not for the company's steadfast refusal to provide any details about what's causing the problem. The top contender: The inability to copy files without stalling isn't a bug at all, but rather the result of a digital rights management feature designed to protect Hollywood (even if the rest of us have to cuss our way through four hours deleting a few gigs worth of crap).
To prove the point, one user found the problem went away when he ran an XP Pro Virtual Machine that was running on top of Vista. Mysteriously, it took him about eight seconds to delete the 23GB of files he wanted to get rid of. Using Vista on the same machine took him more than 25 minutes.

Here a remark, and many others alas concerning Vista' s, I regret my XP, it gives very answers of my bore with my computer. Really, the download, is very long, it has it one faint of disc, problem come from realization, of the system, Alas, it has no resolution it, since 2007, which solved, this problem. The only resolution, it is of transformed Vista' s, in XP, it is necessary to change the mother card, and element which affects the system. In wait, I envisage the purchase, of IMAC, it is the most efficient resolution, for the new system nowadays. Friendships. Claude. ;)

Yet more vista pain  >:(

I never had Vista, I never thought it was worth the hassle and certainly not the money for what you got.

I have to say they got it mostly right with Windows 7 though.

Oh, I thought you had your computer all working ok claude2 but it would seem not.

I have some customers using Vista and their computers are working ok and doing everything they want it to do.

I would say make sure you have all the service packs installed, Vista really does need them, it needs the best or newest drivers for you hardware too, the drivers that go in from the Vista disk are poor.

Pay particular attention to the Intel chipset driver and the graphics card driver.

Dear Datahopa, it has it, a phenomenon, of heaviness, my computer has of very slow reaction, and of BUG sometimes. Since the reformat, it makes less bugs, but it is sure that Vista, has an old worry. I am going to make, with your help, the research, of Update, if there is Plug-in (fix), this problem. My antivirus is competitive (MSE), it makes stability, of my system. But! the system has a worry, perhaps, that it is not a big problem, and he must have resolutions, I hope for it. Thank you Datahopa, friendship of Claude. :) ;)

Dear Freddy, yes it is a rebound, in Vista, in 2008, that I to make the purchase of Vista, in months following, Vista, has sudden of strong criticism, by the professionals, and by customer, it is rather embarrassing for the constructor, but that's true, whom answers specify by the constructor, never have was very punctual. It caused a very poor reputation, has microsoft, but I think that since it, he owes existed of corrective, or, Plug-in, for Fix problem. Friendship Freddy de Claude ;)

Actually my wife has had her vista based computer right after Vista came out. Of course the "flavor" of it's operating system meant nothing to her as her old one died of old age. She just wanted / needed a computer and she actually remarked how much she liked a lot of the features of Vista compared to her old XP based machine.

Some things ya just can't figure out and maybe we shouldn't even try.

She does run an ever watchful Anti-virus and spyware sweep on it every week and her AV watches Every incoming and outgoing email as well as visited sites and potentially downloaded files! Yeah...she takes no prisoners! Still doing her research, shopping, bill paying, business, publishing, email, etc., with her Vista machine!

Maybe computers are a lot like cars...you either get a good one or one that was made on Friday! (expression for being built or put together in a hurry).
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Dear Art, I also admire beauty style of drawing of Vista, it has numerous tools it, the voice recognition, the 3D effect etc. The only one bores it is quick management during connection, he is periodically very heavy. I have believed for a long time, that it was the reason of Internet, but afterwards re-formats it, I analysed well, that something it triggers off, when connection is in to power. I made several chat, with the technicians of HP, they have correctives as ' SATA ' the hard disc, but they pointed out to to me to see a fault with microsoft, worry, and in Hard disc. Friendship of Claude.

The SATA is probably not working at the correct speed because you don’t have the Intel ChipSet driver installed yet, I remember telling Freddy about this and he managed to install the driver quite easily and get more speed out of the Hard Drive, its actually a very common fault after installing Windows XP, Vista or Win 7, people tend to overlook it or simple don’t know about it, but it’s a vital part of a clean install.

I don’t know exactly which motherboard you have but the most likely driver would be the one below, don’t worry if it’s the wrong one it will tell you and refuse to install.

The drivers being offered from HP are 2008, that’s old in computer terms, if it was me I wouldn’t use them. You are better off getting the latest drivers, like I posted above direct from Intel.

Having said that, how is your computer running now?
