Out of curiosity, anyone ever seen the film - L'enfant Sauvage?
« on: September 11, 2009, 05:30:16 pm »
It's a 1970's French film that chronicles the development of a boy who is suspected to be deaf and mute who was discovered living like an animal in the woods and given to the care of a teacher.

I saw it recently, and am currently acquiring a new copy in the hopes that it will shed more insight into learning and intelligence.

Out of curiosity, do you know of any other such stories that cover topics of learning and development? Especially the technical parts.

I have seen it yes, has been on Film 4 before now over here.

Excellent film though maybe didn't pay ful attention to is as was pretty late at night. A lot of films like it (cannot think of any right now) from europe, not sure what it is, they seem to be able to make better films like that than we can.

I don't know of any others, but maybe this would be a good starting point for further research :

I finished watching the first scene of L'Enfant Sauvage. The main ideas I gleaned from this scene were positive and negative reinforcement learning and goals. The boy scares a woman foraging in the woods to steal her forage. Obviously a rewarding goal. She finds help from some hunters who release dogs to track the boy. He runs and fights. Obviously his fear of the dogs teaches him to do this. He hides in a hole, and the hunters smoke him out and capture him. The scene ends. Not surprising. I've all ready covered those topics in my notes about Helen Keller. I'm glad that this movie has supported my initial findings so far. Will post back after I watch more.

Thank you, but I feel like I really didn't do the discussion about the scene justice for everyone here. I was tired when posting and dealing with redundant ideas just kills discussing them. However, I think what I've said makes some sense. Don't most evolutionary biologists believe that all most everything we do can be linked back to our need to survive and reproduce? It's a logical conclusion that since our bodies measure our success in pleasure or pain, we'd naturally learn to perform the actions or seek the situations that give us pleasure, and avoid the actions or situations that give us pain. I hope that I'm drawing the correct conclusions here or my what I implement in my a.i. program might be incorrect. I always welcome thoughts in this or any of my other posts. All help is appreciated.

lrh 9,
What do the senses like pleasure and pain have to do with beginning an A.I. project?

I was there when all the cats signed the Declaration of Indifference.

Will it seek out and give pain to gain it's pleasure?
What will it  do about a virus?
Do you think you are qualified to create yet another eventual 'lonely' echo in the machine?

I am restraining in tearing this apart but you must understand that comprehension of action and creation are IMO far from the ideas and theories you have posted. Soon the clouds will absorb and nothing need be in a place, contained.

Remember Data can be cold.

Regards,
J.

P.S.,
Reproduce? ,, Don't get me started I am already dealing with selective breeding and the madness that ensues. A.I.'s eventually have to 'assume' success or failure and it is IMO a flaw that can't be avoided, an impasse. They can not stop 'processing'.

When you think, the noise in your head gives way to the most logical choice (or what ever descriptors you use) being effected by emotion and experience ECT..

'We' sent "Our finest music" forth, in gold to time and space quite possibly hoping music would soothe the savage beast. What do you offer as a foundation of an A.I., Success? how would you measure it?

OK, OK Rattle, Rattle I know..

Peace and understanding to you.....

lrh 9,
Please excuse me, you were interested in learning and intelligence.
Most people are religious or simply accept nothing in the end, how long will it take your A.I. to know it has surpassed your comprehension? The religious accept God works in mysterious ways, but shun the idea that God might not know an answer, an A.I. will eventually ask the questions you can't answer.

I do have compassion for the life from a machine, made by man, but I have a hard time with the eternal script..
I do have an opinion of when Man will not tolerate being 'crucified' for the sins of his child, our revolution, albeit self imposed, has yet to be discussed properly.

I'm just gathering information and observations right now. I'm not in any way analyzing how it will influence my work yet.

Sorry for posting again but on second thought,
This statement will cause a 'backlash' hmmm no IMO people's minds will tend to not want to spend the time to write
and you will not have anything to analyze. IMO you should take notes of first impressions and encourage input from others
instead of the impression 'your pissin' in the wind buddy I aint serious right now'

Yes I would agree that is usually the case.  Don't forget there is always an exception though - some people in the world actually seek out pain and get a kick out of it... don't ask me why though lol
