If I were to upload a file, would it be possible to replace it with a different version once changes are made?

I can't find any specific settings that suggest you can or cannot.  It might be that if you upload the file then you have ownership and so can edit it - which would allow you to change the file.

We could test it out if you like.  If this is not possible; then as an admin I can update new files, so we could do it that way.

Possibly upload newer file with same name...should overwrite any previous version.

I don't necessarily have to host files here do I? This upload is part of the project I'm working on, so what I could do is upload the file to another site, and create a post for the project with a link to the download location. The problem then would be to figure out how to get that link to always point to the latest upload.

I thought about that and had to question whether the system would catch the identical file name then reply with the typical, "File already exists" statement. Perhaps giving the owner the option to overwrite or not!? Hmmm...

Well we don't mind how you go about it irh9, whatever is best for you.  What I did with my Hap Explorer program was just make a forum topic and supply the program as an attachment to the post.  This gives you the option of having numerous versions (I think we allow about 4 attachments) and you can also remove the old ones if you wish to.

On the identical file names idea - well when you edit a download it gives you the option to upload a new file and this will have the effect of removing the old file regardless of whether it has the same name or not.  Admins have this option and I was thinking the owner of a file would get that option too - so if you want to test it just upload a file and call it 'test' or something and see if you can still edit it.  If not I can always delete it.

If you host it elsewhere the simple solution would be to always make sure you overwrite the original at source so the download would always be the newer version - then you wouldn't have to change the link.  Otherwise, you would have to edit your post with the new link - which is not that bad a job really.
