Playing with Windows 8...
« on: March 22, 2014, 02:59:27 pm »

I'm "learning" Windows 8 for several days. The only problem I encounter is that it's not easy to use a small touchscreen (I recently bought an Asus Transformer Book T100). BTW W8 was invented for machines like that! But with applications automatically installed, nothing to understand by an expert with a normal computer, or any dummy user (like me) with a tablet.

Finally I installed a mouse. Of course the interface is very different but now, everything is easier on a table (to play with files and folders, during the day). The touchscreen is used in my bed only, lol, for ordinary applications.

I'm wondering if I can say that... I'm beginning to enjoy W8. ;)

What are you thoughts on the Win8 APP screen compared to the WIN7 / XP START Button screen?

I once saw an older man looking at a Win8 computer screen and he made an open comment that he couldn't
navigate back to the main screen!  ;)

Hmm...before getting too excited, think about and read this:

Curiouser and curiouser.... :o

Thanks Art and Freddy. Glad to hear I can continue to play with Windows 8 for a while. Before the next "revolution". No doubt that EVERYBODY will hate Windows 9.

But that's life. Microsoft's life. Not the life of ordinary users.

OMG what happened to Windows 3.1? :uglystupid2:

That sounds like Windows 8.1 which was released a while ago now, or did you find something else that I am still to discover ?

Yes, great name for your book Art, I look forward to reading it  O0  ;D

I found what Freddy was talking about, there is another up-date coming to Win 8.1 that is going to change some ways the OS works.

http://www.zdnet.com/a-new-windows-8-1-update-tries-to-win-back-desktop-diehards-7000027123/

After reading it I don't think it will be enough to get me to install my copy of Win 8 back to my PC.

I have a strong feeling however that Windows 9 will give users the opportunity to revert to classic desktop mode, If it doesn't then MS will be finished, or is that all wishful thinking.

MS finished? I hardly think so. Over 80% of the world uses Windows with Apple taking a byte (pun) of 14% and Lunix / Unix about 6%.

These percentages change a bit from time to time and vary according to which market one reads but the point is virtually (pun) valid no matter.

It would take an act of untold power to force change across the globe in order to get all the businesses, companies and individuals to drop windows and go to something else.

Compatibility is the major issue with people surveyed. They would want their spreadsheets, word processors, graphics, printers, scanners, etc., etc. software to work in a very similar fashion or pretty much exactly like their existing ones do.

I'd have no problem switching over to say Ubuntu and I'm very comfortable with it and have used it when my Win computer was down and waiting for parts, but the rest of the world? Can't say for sure but I think people are way too comfortable with their "hateful" Windows.

Ever notice how people will talk badly about Windows and MS while composing their rant using MS IE / Windows based computer? Cool!

We shall have to see, my friend.... O0

It was only a tongue in cheek comment Art, of course MS won't be finished they have their fingers in so many pies, my British humour again, got ya   :D

In my job I see people almost every week that have win 8 and ask me to try to revert it to classic desktop, most people strongly don't want Win 8 and every new PC I make, ( two last week ) both wanted win 7.

All the customer wants is classic desktop back in win 9, if MS don't give it to us then they will suffer and they know that now.

Windows 8 has been a total nightmare for MS and that is no exaggeration, few people are buying it, the MS boss was sacked over it.

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/140733-sinofsky-abrupt-firing-can-microsoft-finally-make-progress-in-mobile

It had nothing to do with software compatibility, people just don't like the way the new start screen (made for touch screen computers) has been forced onto the desktop PC users.

I know I'm not a good example, because I'm just discovering Windows 8 with a "toy" (Asus Transformer Book).

But I'm sorry to say that the disappearance of the Start Menu isn't a problem for me: I rarely used the Start Menu before! Just shortcuts to my favorite programs and folders. OMG nothing changed!

The only disturbing thing is the interface allowing to manage files and folders. Very different. Of course better to use a mouse than a finger. O0

Don't get me wrong, I like Windows 8, it has given me plenty of work and I know there will be more down grades and desktop hacks to install.

Thanks MS  O0 you're da best  8)

It can't really comment as I never tried W8... I'm happy with 7. I was still using Windows 2000 long after XP came out too. We say it a lot but it's a case of if it isn't broken don't fix it.

I will say that Windows 8 makes a lot more sense (to me at least) for something like GT40's machine, so that's good :)
