QuickTime Virus ?
« on: November 09, 2010, 04:15:06 pm »
Anyone know of a new (?) QUicktime virus ?

The past couple of days when my PC goes into standby (still on but screen dimmed) as usual it seems to be doing some stuff.  But a couple of times it has not woken.  This last time everything froze and windows did not respond, memory usage was up to 100% and I had to shut the whole thing down.

AVG said there was some problem with a QuickTime file - waiting now to see if it does it again and provide more details.

internet speed has also plummeted to around 1800 Kbps when normally it is around 14000Kbs.

Now upgrading to the newest AVG to see if it will find anything.

Any thoughts ?

Windows not waking up is quite common and might not be related to any virus. Its a bios problem most of the time.

I have heard of some copys of quicktime having Trojans in them, versions from third party download sites and if you google it there are a few posts about it.

Anyway for now this is what I would do.

Remove quicktime from the PC if its installed, I don’t have it installed on my one, windows 7 Media Player adds native support for .mov files and so far its always worked for me.

I wouldn’t use AVG Freddy, gave it up a while ago, my tip, uninstall it and put in Microsoft security essentials and scan your PC.

Thanks m8,

Well some of it is fixed.  Phoned my ISP and we reset a few settings on the router, rebooted it and now it's fine again (touch wood).  So that's good.

The not waking up thing used to happen quite often when I allowed it to go into hibernation with power down.  But I turned that off, now it just dims the screen.  Until today/yesterday it had never happened before.

I will get rid of QUickTime as you say.   I always hated the damn program anyway, I've always had problems with it from way back.

Might check out that security essentials, but I'm one who likes AVG, it has worked solidly for me for years so I am reluctant to change....sounds like it is not a virus anyway from what you say.

Oh well, I guess a 12 month run on W7 without much of a hitch was nice, I suppose something had to go wrong at some point  :D

During those last days, maybe I have had a similar problem inside SL, during teleports, several times. My old CPU was suddendly working at 100% (2 secondlife.exe running at the same time), so I needed to shut down the program. But no problem with the RAM.

I use QuickTime Pro the whole day (ok, I have a PC, lol), inside and outside SL, because I make lots of clips for SL (only QT movies are readable in SL). No alert from my avast. I think it was the fault of my mouse, that was making unexpected double-clicks. I bought a new one yesterday and yes, no problem anymore. But never sure, SL is so strange.

About my internet speed, I notice for several weeks that it's really slow the day and normal after midnight (for me). Speaking of internet, not of my DSL provider. Maybe too many people on the web. Wait and see... :)

Freddy,

Why not visit a couple of sites like Bit Defender, Kaspersky, Norton, McAfee and do a FREE online virus / malware scan. This way you'll have a better idea what's causing the problem report.

Don't forget to run Spybot S&D and AdAware at least once a week.

Luck!

I'm another one who likes AVG. I used to just use the free version, but back in January of '09 I went ahead and shelled out for the full version, and I REALLY like it a lot. I also have and regularly use MalwareBytes, AdAware and Spybot, which are all top-notch applications, IMHO. As for online checks, I've always been partial to Trend Micro's Housecall. A while back, it caught what the others could not (I was using AVG free, then), so I use it any time my computer is acting up, or when I've been to places that I know I shouldn't visit. ;)

That's weird I had exactly the same problem with my mouse too just last week, first one to do that too.  Mine was in warranty so they sent me out a new one.

I don't really use QuickTime at all.  As for speed, I think mine is pretty much the same all the time.  I remember SL would lag for me when I tried it, I guess they have pretty high demands on servers.

@Art, I'll take a look at those sites and software, thanks.

@GCC.  Yep I've been using AVG since windows 98, it's always seemed sufficient to me but I am no expert.

Must be just me then, from this forum who thinks AVG slows down windows 7 on boot, I have seen it on a number of PC’s, used to like AVG in XP, but im not convinced about it in Windows 7 64 bit. Way to bloated these days.

There is some chat about it on the web here and there.

http://forums.avg.com/sk-sk/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=119041

Heres a thought, open task manager and check out AVG running, do you see it says *32 after its name? Microsoft security essentials is true 64 bit, one of the reasons its so fast in Win 7 and fully integrates with the OS.

Heres a review that gives MSE a positive outcome, and its nothing to do with MS

http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/software/utilities/anti-malware-software/microsoft-security-essentials-640587/review

My tip put MSE on your PC and forget about anti this, anti that, spy this, addware that, or what ever, its time to move on from old software. Im not a lover of MS but I know fast software when I see it and have successfully installed it on something like 10 PC’s XP Vista and 7. And I can honestly say none of the PC’s its on have got infected so far and its so fast you don’t even know its there.

Everyone putting in 2 cents?  I will too.
I've used AVG since the 90s.
But if I had a virus in the Restore Drive it would tell me about the virus but couldn't get it.
I told Art about this and he gave me couple on-line scan programs that did the job.
Then couple years ago the best on-line scan went out of business and was bought by AVG.
I've since found AVG can find any virus anywhere and remove it.
I still use free version.
Regarding MSE, I have "nurdy friends" who use it and swear by it.
To please them, I put it on vista laptop a year ago.
It too does great job.
Incidentally my desktop is 32XP,   the laptop 64Vista.

Oh boy, seems like opinion is divided, but it's good to see what everyone has to say.

Data, I don't doubt you at all, I know you know more about this kind of thing than myself.  I think it's just my not wanting to change from something that has always seemed to work.  Though I do remember what Duskrider mentioned, the old AVG would tell you there was a problem but do nothing about it.

But, I promise I will take a look at those links and see what the fuss is all about.  I don't have a problem with Micro$oft at the moment as they won me over with W7.  But yah the true 64 bit thing does seem enticing !

Now off to unistall QuickTime muhuhuhaa !

Really I would just like to point out that we have a free security for windows made by Microsoft now, it took them long enough but they are now on top of the problem.

I see something like this coming in the future:

Windows 8 will have MSE built in, they will be taken to court by companies that make huge profits out of their anti XXXX, Microsoft will have to put some kind of “You need to make a decision about your virus protection” into Windows.

Just as it was with browsers and almost the same with media players.

Good luck with your PC Freddy.

And thanks Dusky for mentioning your nurdy friends, they sound like some people I know  ;D

Okay Mr Tech Guru, I just ordered a new hard drive and decided I will try out MSE when I reinstall Windaz.

 ;D

Edit : Just read that review you posted.  Looks good to me, although I did trust your opinion in the first place.

Treating your self to a new bigger and faster HD, nice   :)

That review does show MSE in a very positive light doesn’t it, on one of the pages they touch on MSE making the web a safer place for everyone, all MSE’s are linked to a master server as a new virus gets detected its definition can be passed around to all other MSE very quickly, or something like that  ;D

So come on people, use it, and lets kill off viruses, all of us together.
Wouldn’t that be neat  ???

Disclaimer: If you use MSE and get infected I can not be held responsible  :D

Yes, I like the sound of that interconnectedness - very clever stuff.  Anything to rid us of viruses has got to be good.

OK...In reference to the great movie Soylent Green...

Viruses (forget virii) are people!!!

Alright so we can't really do away with those $@#&%@\* people who
write and create the virus entities that plague us but perhaps a better
shield might be the answer.

Imagine...the shields work and stave off all virus attacks...old and new.
Then it is no longer fun for the little cretins to ply their dirty trade and they
slunk off to parts unknown to be a wart on someones behind or the rear
part of a horse!! :D ;)
