The Endless Forest
« on: August 25, 2006, 11:40:15 am »
Here's something else I ran across which will be intensely interesting to some, and not at all to others. It's The Endless Forest. It's another of those internet phenomena which is sort of hard to classify. Whereas you might say that around here the emphasis is on making the virtual become real, the Endless Forest has as its goal to make the real become virtual. The authors say of it "The Endless Forest is probably one of the early steps towards a "jeu d'auteur", a much needed evolution of games towards a medium with the artistic expressiveness of cinema and literature." They go on to present this advisory: "So if you're an avid gamer, there's a big chance that The Endless Forest is not for you. It is not designed to offer any challenges that need to be overcome, or points that can be scored. It's is much more freeform than that. It's probably a little bit like a nice painting. You can stare at it for hours a keep discovering new things. And best of all, you can be part of the picture and new things can appear at any time." So go check it out. You'll know almost immediately if it's made for you or not. Enjoy!

I gave it a try only to find out I don't have the hardware requirements. It's a very demanding program. Minimum requirements is a 2.2 GHz processor for instance. It also requires a quite resent graphic card, maybe not older than a year.    :sad

Yep, needed more PC than I had, too. Shame, I really liked the game. But the blue screen of death got me within a minute or so every time I tried to play.

Ever been a Stag?  I think very cool.  :coolsmiley
I took the deer to the ruins and walked through them and then went searching for the pond.
Found the pond far to the left (although I made so many turns, it could have been any direction)
Like the way it swims under water, (humm...   must have noseplugs). :2funny
Also walked up the stream from the pond.
Tried out lot of controls, more still to test, but find the program interesting.

All in all, good find Knyte
Thanks.

The stag is like a metrix figure, can go through objects,
I ran it through the statue at the waterfall and he turned a pretty dark red.
If off line, it changes back in a couple minutes.
If on line, it stays red til you put your stag in the pond water.

If you really like this program and have trouble running it, there are things you can do to help your computer.
In display options, set at "simple shadows" or even "no shadows."
Also shut off "show players identification"
Also set the game display screen at 800 x 600.
Also set your monitor at 800 x 600
Turn off your anti-virus and firewall.
Turn off any non-needed programs on right side of your taskbar

THE SCENERY MUST HAVE TAKEN FOREVER TO RENDER. it is a very nice and calming program.... my non -computer literate husband said after watching for a while and listening to the stag bellow that none of us knew the difference, but the deer is an elk. i do not kmow if he is right or not. i simply know i like the animal what ever  it is.. thanks dusky for the help and knytetrypper for the link.

In case it may be of help to others,
here is simply what I wrote Aladyblond:

"Here's what I did, hope it helps you.
I downloaded one item, a zip file of just under 52 MB. (TheEndlessForest_v2.00_Screensaver.zip)
I put in a folder and unziped it and got the inner folder
Opened inner folder and doubleclicked the application and it installed.
I noticed it installed to C:\program files.
I went to C:\Tale of Tales\Q3DSv(screensaver) and make a shortcut to my desktop.
Then Doubleclicked my desktop shortcut and I was in.
Later I "registered" and went on line and met other deer but meeting others ain't all that great.   I'll probably be content to be off-line and have endless forest to myself."

You may not want to give up entirely on online play until you've met the forest gods.

Yes yes, the forest Gods, I have heard of them.
Not sighted any yet.
Received blessings from other deer but the gods are elusive
I will take your advice and continue to check on-line for a glimpse.
Thank you.

I really wanted to check it out this weekend, but it didn't like my video card at all, got the infamous blue screen crash.  The ATI mobility radeon, I saw it had a patch, but what the hay.  I tried it on another and it didn't like it also.  I thought it may have been a bad download and thought I'd try again, but got shut down in the middle, just not in the cards yet.

I got this Endless Forest news by email, thought I'd post it for the benefit of anyone here who might be still playing but not on the mailing list:

The Endless Forest will be featured in Night Garden , an exhibition in the form of a sub-technical indoor garden at Mediamatic in Amsterdam from 3 November 2006 to 7 January 2007. Participating artists include Christa Sommerer & Laurent Mignonneau, Felix Hess, Mateuz Herczka, Ralf Schreiber & Christian Faubel, Debra Solomon and Petra Blaisse. The exhibition opens tomorrow at 8 PM. You are invited!

At the occasion of Museumnacht in Amsterdam, the Twin Gods will be present in the Forest on Saturday 4 November between 7.30 and 11.30 in the evening. Don't expect as intense a performance as usual, but more of an ongoing stream of little fun things happening once in a while.
