Raining Maddness!!
« on: June 19, 2015, 01:50:53 am »
As a few of you may or may not know I live in the southern part of Oklahoma, near the Red River. We get about 30 something inches of rain per year on average. So far this year we are at 50 something inches and still have another half a year to go. Yesterday, a tropical storm decided it needed to visit us. We're already soaked with rain water and all our lakes and ponds are flooded. THEN the storm hit.

My family is ok but I thought I would say something about it. Below is a video I uploaded to facebook last night. I hope its visible for you guys. This is taken at my sisters house. I live on the other side of the street from them. The water you see is not from a river, nor a creek (although I call it that in the video), it is some runoff from the ponds from my side of the road. Its basically a drainage ditch. My dad is 72 and lived there all his life but says it has never rained that much. It could have been so much worse.

What a nightmare.  :o

We've had a lot of freak flooding in the UK over the past few years. None of it where I live though some areas around the coast, 2 miles away or so, have had it bad. I'm on pretty high ground here.

Just glad you guys are all ok really.

The water getting into the house though, that's going to take some cleaning up.

Like Freddy said, what a nightmare.

Something bad is happening to this planet. There are floods all over the world. Probably some climate phase, I hope humans didn't cause it and it is natural Earth cycle.

I hate water related issues like this one. I've gone through similar ones through various times in my life.

Put plastic against the doors first, then sandbags. I wondered how that "foam in a can" like Greatstuff might work to seal around the bottom and lower sides, then plastic and sandbags (or dirtbags if no sand available).

Sorry for your plight Aaron but Mother Nature can often be relentless when it comes to water!

Of course most insurance companies will claim they don't pay for Acts of God or nature or floods or water damage from external or outside your home. They always find a way to avoid paying it seems.

Best of luck to you and your family. Be safe.

We got the carpet pulled up and everything is swept and clean. We're waiting for some damage assessment as well. My advice to my brother-in-law was to add a short wall or barrier now that we know how far the water reaches.

I also looked up some more info on El Nino. Apparently, the U.S. government has already done lots of predicting for this year. For Oklahoma, they said we were supposed to get wetter than normal weather this summer. So far they've been spot on. However, it also predicts that this winter is going to be a lot colder for us. A few years ago we had an ice-storm that shut down all travel and electricity for two weeks... so this gives me something to look forward too (sarcasm).  The predictions shown lots of terrible stuff for the rest of the world. I'm adding the link to this information so anybody here can find out more about their area.

With all due respect old friend, perhaps a For Sale sign might prove to be a better remedy.

Home is where the heart is, that's true, but there's also a lot to be said for higher ground. (I now live on much higher ground than before). I too eventually got tired of having my furniture up on blocks and sweeping water out my front door!

I now have a dry basement (up on the higher ground thing).

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best!! (but you knew that). O0
