Is the Metaverse dead for now?
« on: May 10, 2023, 04:27:04 pm »
"But the Metaverse was officially pulled off life support when it became clear that Zuckerberg and the company that launched the craze had moved on to greener financial pastures. Zuckerberg declared in a March update that Meta's "single largest investment is advancing AI and building it into every one of our products." Meta's chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, told CNBC in April that he, along with Mark Zuckerberg and the company's chief product officer, Chris Cox, were now spending most of their time on AI."

It might have worked earlier by capitalizing on a novel concept, or later with sufficiently good execution to simplify everyday life with virtual classrooms, offices, and games. Now the world seems neither here nor there, if the quarantine had lasted longer then the technology could have had actual utility - the zoom classrooms at my brother's elementary school really didn't allow for much learning, and now it seems no grade is at a consistent academic level. Before, no one could pay attention to the teacher for more than a few minutes, now they've discovered Roblox and everyone's laser focused on their shared games. Another solution was definitely needed.

I think the idea of the Metaverse has too much potential for creating useful and meaningful environments to die completely, I bet it'll just percolate in the background for a while until the technology advances and enough use cases are found - there could be augmented workspaces featuring extra monitors, desk space, and organizational tools, educational environments with engaging challenges - like that Roblox rising lava vocabulary race, and opportunities for quality social time like watching movies with friends and family living far away.
