Show off your desktop!
« on: January 20, 2011, 01:43:14 pm »
Years back, when the Internet was more or less new to me, I frequented another forum (sadly, now defunct) who's goal was to assist others with problems and challenges with their computers. It had a great community, full of people who were helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable, much like here. And one of the "Off Topic" things that many folks got involved in within the community was to periodically show off screenshots of their desktops, so that others could see and enjoy them, as well. I saw some wonderful images in this way, and in some ways, it's nudged me toward getting into graphic design, and expanding my creativity in that direction.

Thus, I thought it may be interesting to see if I could generate some interest here to do the same thing. If you folks are willing, I'd love to see what your desktops look like (unless it's R rated, or worse, of course), and I'm more than happy to share mine, too. :)

Be warned, however. My desktop is a custom-made image, meant to cover three monitors with a different image for each, so it's HUGE! I'll also be sharing the details of how I made the desktop, and a photo of the entire setup, so you have an idea of the monstrosity that is my computer. ;) I hope you enjoy it.

Ok, let's start off with my current desktop. This is an actual screenshot, including icons, obtained by minimizing or closing any current programs, and pressing [PrintScreen] and pasting the captured image into my favorite graphics app (in my case, Paint Shop Pro) and saving the image:

The black areas are portions that are outside the dimensions of my desktop, so are, essentially, blank. Interestingly enough, that's not what the actual desktop image looks like, because of the actual configuration of my monitors, and the way that Windows "tiles" the image. To demonstrate:

As you can see here, the layout of the monitors is a bit odd, because it represents how they're physically laid out, so that my mouse can move between them in the expected manner. The "main" monitor is 1920 by 1080, while the two left monitors are both 1280 by 1024. that makes for an overall size of 3200 by 2048 pixels, which is a nice, large bit of real estate to play with. :) However, it takes up a LOT of memory, so having 4 Gig or memory or more is highly recommended for such a setup. I'm using 2 graphics cards to make this work (the on-board card, and a PCI-Express card, as well). Otherwise, I'd be limited to only 2 displays.

Anyway, because of the way that Windows XP handles display images across multiple monitors, I've had to "arrange" the images a bit to make them come out right on the screens. Here's what the actual image that I'm using looks like:

You'll notice that one of the monitor images is more or less split across the middle, and placed with the bottom half of the image above the lower left monitor's image, and the upper half placed below it. It took  a bit of experimentation to get the placement right, but when I finished, the results were terrific! :) Again, the black area is part of the image that lays outside the bounds of the displays.

And finally, here's a photo of what my computer actually looks like:

I hope you enjoyed this post. I rather liked making it. Now all that's left is for you to show us what you look at on a regular basis. If you don't want us seeing your icons, that's ok. Just show us the image you use, instead. And if you need a place to host your screenshot/image, just holler, and I'll PM you details about how I can help with that. :)

I like the way you have made a special wallpaper for your screens, that is a neat idea.

I have two screens, not much going on, on the second at the moment, mainly I use the second one when I’m playing 3d games, I have the game on my main 37 inch screen but keep my web browser open on the second 19 inch, that way I can monitor my favourite sites and still use the web when playing.

My resolution is 1920 x 1080 so the screen shot is large, sorry. Didn’t want to shrink the res and loose quality.

I don't like to have a lot of icons and things on my desktop so mine is quite sparse.

The background is a screen shot from the Lord of the Rings Online.

Cavey, I don't understand what you're doing, but I am impressed.
I think you using 3 monitors, and you can put all 3 on one screen??
Almost sci-if like.

And Sir Data, so much info on your desktop, so very handy.  I love it.

And Freddy, - Wow, What a cool picture.  I'd like to do that too but I got so many icons I wouldn't be able to see the pic.

O.K,  I almost ashamed to show mine.  It got couple hundred icons, I kinda like everything where I can get to it.  Anyway here it is:

Boring huh?
I do have one person who brightens things up.
Here she is.

However screenshot don't do her justice, so here's video I just did.

I just read through GCC post again and noticed something that as Tech Guru I thought I should point out.

Quote
it takes up a LOT of memory, so having 4 Gig or memory or more is highly recommended for such a setup

Most people with XP have 32bit, but XP 32bit cant handle any more than 3.23GB of RAM, there are some tweaks that can be done to force XP to use more RAM but it has limitations as to how much RAM it can throw at a single application, I’m pretty sure XP can only allocate 2gig of RAM to an application, where as a 64 bit OS doesn’t have that bottleneck.

In a nutshell 32 bit XP can only use 3 GIG of RAM putting any more than that in the PC is really not worth it. However as memory runs in dual channel on most motherboards and people tend to buy RAM in pairs I can see why some people will have 4 GIG of RAM in there XP setups but only actually use 3 GIG.

Sorry went off topic, carry on  :)

Yep, Apps can only access 2gig. Xp itself though can use the part that's left over (I think it parks itself over there).
Some neet setups. I've long been dreaming about multiple displays, I guess I spend my money on other things ;)
Here's my setup:

@DH

You are essentially correct about the memory limitations of the X86 version of XP, but I should probably point out that the memory used for the background image isn't entirely located in system RAM, but rather kept within the confines of the Video Cards' memory, instead. This would be even better, were I using an SLI setup for my video cards, but alas, I'm not quite that financially advantaged at this point. Also, that 2GB memory limit is per process, and I don't run any programs that take up that much RAM. :) Well, that's not entirely true. When I'm doing a detailed render in Bryce the memory usage gets up there, but with 7 computers on my network, and having most of them using network rendering nodes to share the work (e.g. Bryce Lightning), the memory load (not to mention CPU usage) is spread out nicely, so that probably doesn't count.  ;)

Thanks Dusky. Nice to see Sandee in action.

In the old good time of my addiction to Haptek things, I played a lot with the XP Active Desktop. I could launch my skits and bots on it (because all are HTML pages). On the following photo, the girls are talking to me (just random sentences).

Of course I could get rid of the icons, but a desktop without icons is not a desktop, lol. By the way, if all that was fun, it used lots of resources, sometimes crashed, and the thing was not handy at all.

Yes, totally useless. Now the desktop is back to a normal state: black.  ;D

In the past, I used lots of manga pictures as backgrounds (you know, things like 'ghost in a shell' and 'akira' stuff) These days though, I prefer to go for something blue or green, to keep things relaxed.
To manage the icons, I use a free tool called fences, which keeps things nice and clean.

I don't know how people cope with so many icons on the desktop  :o

Some nice looking set ups though.  Really like those pebbles Bragi :)

Dual screens is a blessing, it's great for when I am coding, one screen for code, other screen for browser.

I use some of my photos for backgrounds as well, but went with this screen shot for a while for a change.

Liking Freddy’s wallpaper picture, it gives the feeling of depth while not being too bright, very smart, neat and tidy desktop too, why do I think your house is the same  ;)

Dusky & GT I like to see a PC being well used and boy! do you use yours.

Bragi, thanks for the fences tip, haven’t heard of that one before.

Oh! 400 posts  :D

Bragi, I like your fense idea.
So much that I went to download.com and got it.
May add little order to a wild landscape.
