All,
  Wanted to say thanks for putting in the post on browsers,  I just put in firefox, haven't put any plugins yet.  I was using th P4 with XP yesterday, I updated the antiviruse program and picked up more files while downloading the update.  Also got redirected all over the internet not to mention the popups.
  I'm still trying to get Linux to install the modem so I'll be able to use Linux rather than windows.

Good luck with it. What modem do you have? There's been some problems with some modems not working with linux. I have a hardware-based US Robotics fax/modem that I downloaded drivers for from US Robotics - they had Linux drivers available, thankfully. Not all modems do. But since I now have DSL, I don't need the drivers.

If you have a "WinModem" or software-based modem (instead of a hardware-based, often called a "controller-based), then getting it to work in Linux may be a bit problematic. Check out LinuxQusetions.org - they even have a hardware compatibility list, and a forum to ask questions about these things (and all things Linux). It's one place I recommend to anyone with Linux as it's been a big help to me in the past.
