Sparrows figured this out a long time ago!
« on: January 08, 2021, 07:41:47 pm »
If you ever observed a sparrow flying long distances you would notice that it has an undulating path where it tucks its wings to its side then flaps the wings every now and then to sustain its velocity and altitude. Here's a short video showing how this approach produces a higher velocity because of gravity assist. The bird's initial descent is steeper then it rises at a lower angle where the wings flap to make up aerodynamic losses.
