Wait a minute... Isn't that NFC (Near Field Communication) ? I originally expected to be impressed by some very-low-energy-consumption microprocessor, but I was wrong...

According to Wikipedia, information from a device equipped with NFC can have data read from it even if the antenna is passive, so I assume they are using this technology. Another clue is also the fact that they must nearly touch the scanner to be identified (which has it's advantages - longer range increases risk of theft).

Not a bad idea. However I am not familiar with the security issues and advantages NFC has - I do know however that it is used as an alternative to credit cards tho so I assume there is some encryption at place.

It's actually RFID and there's no power usage or consumption on the part of the user, only the circuit identifying the RFID Tag(s). They are used practically worldwide in the food, garment, warehousing, medical, transportation and security fields, to name a few.

One individual, (among many) on YouTube used an RFID to allow his custom J.A.R.V.I.S. home / apartment to allow him access to his home, record the time he had been gone and adjust the lighting for his arrival, plus more. He's but one who had built a working Jarvis program, but Chad's actually controlled things in his apartment, kept inventory or his Netflix rentals, help set timers for food, knew his location at all times, tracked any packages for him and more. Look up Chad Barraford, or check his videos here: http://www.youtube.com/user/ProjectJarvis/videos

Oh, RFID... Well I guess they both work then...

And that guy has some nice features into his Jarvis project... It still lacks an integrated chatterbot however the hardware control is amazing. And he ran it on a catastrophic Mac machine, lol.

Anyway, now I understand why the title is 'a grain of rice...'

Maybe I should make and implant my own...
