A lot of people use and like AVG and it does have a PAID version as I have been told.

Personally, I have used Bit Defender for many, many years and while it does require a subscription,
it is very reasonable. It's usually one price for 2 or 3 computers for 2 or 3 years and again, the
price is very reasonable. Their security and scheduled (by you) updates sometimes require a reboot
but always leave your computer guarding anything that tries to come in to visit! I love this program
and the company service is very good at responding to questions or assistance. I've tried others
many years ago but settled on this one and have not regretted it one bit!! YMMV

The best time to install MSE is after a clean install of windows, I have had MSE refuse to install on a couple of computers now (customers, not my computer), if it detects windows has been messed with in some way it can refuse to install. In the end I had to re install windows, which was worth it, there is nothing quite like a clean install to put your PC back to where you want it.
