Does "Mona Lisa' mean something? I don't understand why they call that painting a 'Mona Lisa'

This has many facets, Delayed but possibly planned, or maybe the authors of the two articles are buddies and had lunch over this and a good discussion?
If they are calling it a Mona Lisa by DaVinci, Then is it possible that it is part of a larger painting that could be examined 'collectively'? or when you 'stand back' to look at a larger picture you're too far away to see clearly?
