Searching forums is bugging me.
« on: June 15, 2011, 04:08:57 pm »
Firstly let me say that I’m not talking about this site.

Its really starting to annoy me that on so many forums these days if you want to search it you have to put in that image verification rubbish, just to search, why would they do that?

So you end up registering to get over that problem, then a week later if you haven’t made one post you get told your account might be closed because you haven’t posted.

Do you think they would rather I posted a load of junk to the forum because I don’t really have any positive contribution to make or would it be better just to let them close my account?

What does this have to do with Ai Dreams?

I think its bots on the web that are causing this nightmare, what can we do?

Crazy isn't it. I'm not sure why they need to check for searches, maybe to stop bots eating up bandwidth ? I find that approach annoying too.

I can understand the week deadline though to some extent. When I see inactive accounts I start to think that it is probably a bot. Often those ones are never active so easy to spot - if someone had actually used the forum then I would be okay with it. Usually I give it about a year to delete old inactive accounts - otherwise it is a ridiculous task sifting through all the accounts that never get used.

It's bots yes.  They are every where. And just this week a lot of people over on SMF are reporting a sudden increase in bot registrations.  Stop forum spam site has been down for two days now, probably having been attacked...

It's not good.

Yeah its very annoying what the bots are making sites “feel they have to do” preventing you from searching at a reasonable speed is going too far IMHO.

Maybe its just me but many many times I get the image verification wrong, try a few more times, finally get it right only to find that I need to try another search term. :tickedoff:

I’ve seen it on some SMF forums too, somehow it needs to be spread about the community that it’s not really acceptable.

I say, lets not let the bots win. O0

It's not just you. My success rate for some types of CAPTCHA images is only 40%, and sometimes I have to get a new image 5 or 6 times before I find one that I can actually figure out.

There are even times that my ie or Firefox is extremely slow to boot almost as if planning what to present.

The BOTS are SOO helpful that soon we'll be able to just imagine what we'd like to search for and they'll
show us!! And THIS is the technology that was supposed to help make our lives easier and more convenient!?
Yeah...OK...! ???
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

It’s not just me then.

It’s a shame, as with most things in life someone comes along and uses something good for negative or just bad things, then someone copies the idea and before you know it, its snowballed and it starts to effect millions of people.

I’m colour blind and for me them image verification things are a right pain. >:(
