Mav,

How many times did you have to pull the cord in order to get it running?

Huh?...Oh?...Electric is it? Will wonders never cease.... :D
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Got tired and fustrated, got a SSD, Intel 160Gb gen2.  Its in there.
Truth is I still get 1min 20 sec load time.  Push the power, 10 sec till the Gateway screen,  25 sec to loading windows, 45 sec to sign in screen, timer off then on,   1 min 20 sec to windows. Probably the same as before.
I used cloning to transfer the original Hd to the SSD, possibly this is a problem?
I tried using HD tune pro, Reads to 180 mb/sec wouldn't do writes because of a partition copied from the original HD.  Benchmarks in the test did read and writes that looked good.
Oh I tried the performance in win 7 again and get the 5.9
I posted my results at an Intel forum, wait and see.

Nice SSD Carl2  ;D

I’m learning as we go here, SSD is new to me too, but this is what I know so far.

You must do these to get the real performance out of the drive.

A clean install of windows 7.

Most of the useful settings that pertain to optimizing performance on the SSD are done automatically by Windows7. The Windows 7 installer can detect that it is not a spinning disk and configure the system accordingly.

Everyone having an intel ssd and windows 7 should enable AHCI option for SATA controller.

Run Intel SSD Toolbox once a week on the drive.

Hope this helps.

EDIT:
I should have pointed out that you should enable AHCI option for SATA in bios before you install windows 7 to be sure windows installs correctly.

Purchased a new optical drive and internal hard drive myself.

I'm going to do a clean install of Windows on the hard drive later but right now I need to archive data.

Archiving hey - yes can be a pain.  Since Datahopa helped me fix my HD I decided to wait until it fills up before getting a new one.  I've yet to decide what to buy first for my upgrade...probably the CPU and memory... prices are still wild though.  The new graphics card will probably be the last thing I get, as if GTA4 works then that will keep me occupied for a while lol.

How's the Python coming along LRH ?

Pretty good. I feel like I'm fairly competent with the language.

As for my project? I'm still working on the importer at the moment. I'm doing some major refactoring that will hopefully pay off. (Refactoring is the editing or redesign of programs to improve some aspect of them.)

I think I've thought of a fairly good way to allow programs and objects to interface with the importer. I'll probably give the importer a "target" attribute and the importer will then place the imports in the target. Unfortunately coders and users will either have to set the target manually or define a method on their agent and call imports using that method. It is a trade-off. It's extremely rare to be able to have everything. I just think it is the best trade-off.

I finished installing my optical drive and internal hard drive. I've noticed an increase in application performance. Especially in load times.

Evidently my old optical drive and hard drive were slower than my new ones.

My Windows score is now 5.7, with my CPU being the limiting factor.

Hmm, getting quite involved now then.  Good stuff, keep at it.

Good to hear you benefited from the upgrade.  What CPU do you have ?

I've been looking at power supplies today and decided I am definitely not getting a cheap old thing, I'm prepared to spend top dollar for once on something that is going to last.

Thanks for putting that in Freddy,  known you for a while and trust your opinion.  I think I can install the drivers from the instalation disk by putting the disk in explorer and ckicking on the app file for the driver. Have to check this out again.  I have to order a cable for the SSD and will probably get Win 7 at the same time.
I already know the SSD works with the bios set to raid, can I switch to AHCI and do a trim for the SSD?  Set in raid for normal use, boot into Win 7 on the SSD and use the Raid drive for storage,  once a week set it to AHCI and do a trim?
Anyone heard of a game called Avator, didn't get to see the movie but I've got a free download for it?  be nice if it was in 3 d.

Thanks for the compliment, but I think you mean Datahopa as it was he who commented on the SSD's not me.  What you are doing sounds fun though...lucky person.

My Windows score is now 5.7, with my CPU being the limiting factor.

That surprises me, I thought it’s normally the HDD that is the bottle neck.

Is that a windows Vista score lrh9 ?

Yes. I'm not putting too much stock in the score. I'm sure the hard drive is still the performance bottleneck. Hard drive access and seek times have remained somewhat constant for decades and are orders of magnitude slower than other computer operations. Mechanical operations can only occur so quickly.

The advent of the solid state drive will improve this problem, but at the moment they are too expensive for mainstream use.

I've heard that scientists may be able to create a postage stamp sized terabyte capacity solid state drive. Allegedly:

Quote
Led by Professor Tadahiro Kuroda, the team is composed of researchers from Toshiba and the Keio University in Tokyo. The team has created a 1 TB SSD prototype the size of a small postage stamp, consisting of 128 NAND flash memory chips and one controller chip. The miniature storage device boasts transfer speeds of 2 Gbps, and also uses radio communications  which will ultimately make it cheaper to manufacture.

Currently the team doesn't expect to see commercial versions of the product until 2012.

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/SSD-Stamp-NAND-Flash-Toshiba,9656.html

I'm skeptical until they hit the markets.

I did think it looked like a Vista score, in Win 7, as long as you have 4 gig of RAM, the HDD normally scores quite a lot lower then other components, as it should.

Probably not alone when it comes to dreaming of the day I can finally get shot of HDD from my rig  8) get rid of a bulk of that access and seek time. It’s getting closer as prices fall. We will all have them in a year, maybe two.  ;D :D ;D

Nice link to the postage stamp sized terabyte capacity solid state drive, technology to keep an eye on, me thinks  ;)

Freddy, thats okay.  I always associate you with AI dreams probably from your work with the Hap Explorer.
Datahopa thanks noticed you have a pretty good knowledge of computers.
Got someone at the Intel forum giving me a hand with the SSD.  Just put in a firmware update,  I downloaded the toolbox but it will not install.  Just gave him some Info to look at.  Read something about using a low number port to put the SSD in,  I'm using port 5, should try changing that.

I’ve spent my birthday money, oh well that didn’t last long ..  hehe.

Got a new mouse, I’ve been looking at the Microsoft sidewinder X8 for a little while, now I have one and It’s not a bad product IMHO.

If you are interested check out this video, not just a normal mouse.
