Windows 8 soon (maybe)?
« on: November 30, 2013, 01:27:43 pm »

After using Windows during 20 years, and before buying a PC under Windows 8 (8.1), I suddenly realize that I rarely used the Start button. OMG what a dummy I am!!

Windows 3.1, 98SE, XP, Seven (Starter on my netbook), except when I went to SL, most of the time, I launched my favorite programs with a shortcut on the desktop.

Next problem I'm worrying about (I'm old, I need to worry about everything), is it important to have the same OS for the laptop (Windows) and the screen when used as a tablet (Android)?

I guess that horrible problems will happen after some weeks or days (return to the factory). But of course I hope I'm wrong... :idiot2:

Ah ok. Windows 7 on a conventional computer. Good, so I'm sure that a dummy like me will always understand what he does. ;)  I still have Windows 7 (Starter) on my beloved little netbook and all that works fine. No need to change it. (BTW my antique XP desktop is still alive, lol). Please don't laugh at me. Do I really NEED a new computer to go to Google, YouTube, televisions, ebooks and Second Life only? Of course NO.

But, ridiculous idea, I wish to finally buy another PC (Xmas soon). After my experience with a netbook, I want a cheap, small and basic laptop, of course with a touchscreen. For a first try with the terrible new Windows...

I don't need that but I don't want to stay in the dark (Real Life is too short) and miss "the Windows 8 revolution" (you may say I'm stupid and I enjoy troubles, no problem, I agree). :idiot2:

Now I will NEVER be sure that I control EVERYTHING when I touch the screen (a classic feeling for every normal dinosaur, lol). Strange but interesting funny adventure... :2funny:

I'm comparing, comparing... Maybe I will buy an ASUS T100. Cute jewel, nice toy, not expensive at all.
A modest "ultrabook"-tablet for ordinary users (for me it's only a modern netbook for the new Windows). My first step to the future.
Wait and see...  ::)

I would make sure that it has a big enough SSD for SL GT, I see that the T100 can come with a 32 GIG drive, that is very small these days especially for normal people.

How much HDD space are you taking on your netbook ?

Many thanks Data. I didn't realize that my Singularity (the viewer I use for SL) folder was so large! :o

Not a problem if I continue to use the netbook to go to SL. Or maybe I should choose a true laptop to give a try to Windows 8?

Thanks again. O0

Oops, I'm ashamed! Correction (what a dummy I am, stupid mistake between Mbytes and Gbytes!!): all the programs I have installed on the netbook "only" take 55 Gbytes (161 free). Sorry. :-[

It's OK GT :)

You are going to need at least a 64 GIG drive.

There is a T100 64 GIG version so it should be OK, just.

Gee, my Tablet only has 32 GB but I don't do memory intensive programs and games on it. It's my personal tablet but I also use it for some business purposes (expense statements, time sheets, status reports, etc.).

I REALLY LOVE my tablet and I also bought the optional keyboard so I can get at least 15 hours of use and many more if just standby.
ASUS TF300T. Works fine for me but no DVD/CD player of any kind. (Soon, they'll be obsolete as well).

What I really like is the battery life! I couldn't stand it when my laptop only got 1-1/2 to 2 hours of run time before dying. Nope...and I hope my heart keeps running for a long time too!! (batteries not included). Heh!! :2funny:

Thank you Data and Art. Very interesting and useful opinions about tablets, computers and hearts. BTW no need to worry about the battery unless you have a pacemaker... :)  ;)
