The Open Virtual Assistant Initiative

No matter what their reasons for being drawn to artificial intelligence and robotics, just about everyone would like to have some kind of intelligent virtual assistant to help them. Characters like "Jarvis" from the Iron Man movies have introduced the idea to a lot of people who had never even thought about artificial intelligence before, and products like Alexa and Siri have offered a frustrating taste of what we could have if we were prepared to abandon all pretense at privacy. There are also worthy products like Ultra Hal from Zabaware which have been around for a long time and have a dedicated following.

Now at last there is a sophisticated open source and freely available intelligent virtual assistant. It supports web and phone interfaces and you can sign up and start using it right away. Alternatively, you can download all the software and set it up on your own server for complete privacy.

To be honest, this project looks like it could be a goldmine (figuratively speaking) for all of us. There is so much there that I haven't had time to look over most of it yet, but I will post more as I do. Please take a look and let the forum know if you think you will have a use for any of this software.

I've been preoccupied with work this week and haven't had time to try this out myself yet, however I will do so as soon as I can. What you have presented there looks a bit buggy doesn't it. Are you trying out the stable version of the software or the bleeding edge version?

This is supposed to be the stable version, but I could be missing something. It says Almond gets its knowledge from Thingpedia, which stores knowledge about devices and services, whereas Wikipedia stores knowledge about facts. Maybe I need to get used to the idea of it being fundamentally different from something resembling a google search.
