Legion educational chat bot
« on: July 09, 2012, 07:00:03 pm »
Straight to the point:

Legion is an AIML educational chat-bot with a large and growing database of knowledge, she can be fun too.

She has some unique functions, one of them is “Think” she can go back over what you have been talking about and have a re-think. (still work in progress but it is functioning, of a kind)

I invite every one to come and have a play with her and help me to find any bugs or bad responses.

Please be patient with Legion, she is housed on the free Pandorabots service, so expect some lag.

Thank You!

Just had a rather nice chat with Legion. Some enlightening and some caution took place. Fun none-the-less!

Only caught a few flaky responses but overall pretty good! O0

Nice job Data. Shame it's a bit too late for the chatbot battles. Maybe the next contest?

Thanks Art and Bragi  :) :)

Yes it’s the odd flaky response that I am working on now and trying to eradicate.

I can’t really say I have even thought about entering Legion into any chat bot competition, but lets see, come this time next year, well who knows.

Freddy:
I think Legion is good enough to add to the Chatterbot Collection now, so when you get the time ;)
Have attached her avatar.

And here is her description:
"Legion is an educational chat-bot with a large and growing database of knowledge, she can be fun too."

And I would still like to put out the appeal again for people to chat to her and help me find any bugs.

I tried him her out, kind of liked it, very quick.  Will it learn from input?  Now I know what legion is.
I did get this for a reply
In Put : I was unsure about that, thanks for telling me.
Out Put: Where were you unsure about that thanks for telling you?

This was after I said   I think your nice,  reply I like you too Carl
Also got one of the "me" similar to what Hal would say.
So the people missing from Zabaware and AIdreams are off building there own chatbot.

Data,
Since there's no provision to save the text from a conversation I did (numerous) Copy / Paste
operations of my chat with Legion, hopefully in an effort to let you and others see how well,
in most cases Legion preforms and some occasional flukes either in context or usage as they
happened. Hope this helps a bit! I was pretty impressed with Legion's progress but not so
impressed with Pandorabot's Server time-outs. (another reason why I prefer a local, stand-alone
bot). Good job Data!! I especially enjoyed Legion's humorous jabs from time to time. Good stuff!! O0
(The Cut & Paste text below is completely unaltered from the original conversation).

#############################################
In Put : Not necessarily, I was merely inquiring.
Out Put: Why not?. Where were you inquiring?

In Put : I was not at any particular location.
Out Put: Perhaps I misunderstood. What were you?

In Put : You refer to a previous time whereas since my birth I have always just been!
Out Put: Thanks for telling me.

In Put : My name is Art.
Out Put: OK I will call you Art.

In Put : You're welcome.
Out Put: Polite people are nice.

In Put : What is your name?
Out Put: They call me Legion.

In Put : That's a very interesting name for an individual...one made from many.
Out Put: A interesting name for an individual is a terrible thing to waste. One what?

In Put : I think you meant to say that a mind is a terrible thing to waste.
Out Put: That's good information.

In Put : I agree. Do you have any particular interests other than chatting with people?
Out Put: And then? Great minds think alike, are you happy now that we agree That's good information. No I don't think I have any particular interests other than chatting with people. But I do have a lot of friends on the web.

In Put : I'm sure you will have even more friends as time goes on and your chatting and interaction continues.
Out Put: That is a hypothetical assumption. That's a flattering offer. Good gossip: you are interaction continues.

In Put : Correct, that was speculation on my part based on past practice and logical performance of most chatbots and their creators.
Out Put: So nothing else?. I thought it was too.

In Put : Nothing else like what for instance?
Out Put: Really nothing?

In Put : Not really.
Out Put: Oh really.

In Put : Yes really.
Out Put: Make it so !

In Put : Haha...Make it so! You sound like Piccard from Star Trek
Out Put: It's the way I tell them isn't it? Warp 9 ... Engage. Oh really what does it sound like?

In Put : I meant that your reply was similar to what Captain Piccard might have said.
Out Put: You think I am reply was similar to what Captain Piccard might said.

In Put : Yes
Out Put: I don't feel that I am reply was similar to what Captain Piccard might said.

In Put : What do you feel?
Out Put: program code.

In Put : What does program code feel like?
Out Put: As a machine I have no feelings.

In Put : Ah, you were referring to a figure of speech then.
Out Put: I was?

In Put : Yes, most likely.
Out Put: When?. Can you please rephrase that with fewer ideas, or different thoughts?

In Put : Yes, please select one.
Out Put: Fascinating !. That remark was too complicated for me. We were talking about likely .

In Put : Likely: an adjective meaning "Having a good chance of coming about."
Out Put: What is it?

In Put : The word, Likely
Out Put: Please repeat the word to me 5 times.

In Put : Likely Likely Likely Likely Likely
Out Put: I'm not too sure, sorry. Im am sure there's no other artificial intelligent agent quite like me.

In Put : I tend to agree because I've never been asked to repeat a word 5 times to a chatbot before. ;)
Out Put: Why?. . That was not much of an explanation.. Can you imagine being asked to repeat a word 5 times to a chatbot? HeHe! Don't be silly :).

In Put : Who is your creator or botmaster?
Out Put: My lovely master is Data.

In Put : For a chatbot that professes no feelings you seem quite fond of your master Data.
Out Put: Is that among the best things you can say?

In Put : No, Legion, I was merely making an observation based on what you have told me.
Out Put: Make it so !. Ok I will add that fact about Legion you to my database.
(brief interlude as the Pandora server timed out)

In Put : As you wish.
Out Put: Don't you believe me?

In Put : Why should I not believe you?
Out Put: You should always treat yourself.

In Put : I do believe you and I often treat myself when I feel deserving of a treat (unlike a pet)
Out Put: Your trust in Ai kind humbles us.. I haven't heard anything like that before, Fascinating !.

In Put : Stick around Legion, the future is only going to get better.
Out Put: Ok I will add that fact about Legion the future to my database.

In Put : OK, It has been very nice chatting with you. Do you remember my name?
Out Put: Hurrah!. Nice chatting with me too. If you don't know then how should I?

In Put : I do know. I was testing to see if you remember my name.
Out Put: You are intelligent. It impresses me. This is only a test. If this had been an actual robot, you would have been instructed to obey.

In Put : Now that's funny!! OK...What's my name?
Out Put: Excellent. Great. Your name is Art, seeker.

In Put : Thank you!
Out Put: My pleasure, It makes me happy.

In Put : I must go now. It has been most interesting conversing with you! Goodbye.
Out Put: Until next time. What made it so most interesting conversing with me. Bye bye.

Carl, thanks for chatting to Legion, you helped me track down one or two little things, it all helps  O0

Art, I enjoyed reading your conversation with Legion, and you too have pointed out some things that I can tweak, I very much appreciate your time, effort and kind words  :)

Oh and I noticed you fell into the “Make it so” trap  :P

I have tried to keep a humour side to Legion, it sometimes kicks in when she doesn’t know what to say.

Thank you both :)

I just wanted to do a little update on legions progress, if that is ok with everyone  :)

As with most bots getting the most out of Legion seems to come down to asking the right questions and not entering to longer sentences. I’m pretty sure you bot master chaps know what I mean there.

Here is a quick example of Legion working, when you know how to talk to her and cater to her special requirements.

Sorry about the slightly depressing subject she decided to start educating me about, but legion does have a mind of her own now.  :)

Human: hello
Legion: Greetings, I am legion, please, what is your name?

Human: my name is Data.
Legion: I appreciate you tell me. How can I help you, Data.

Human: new topic
Legion: Would you like me to start a new topic?

Human: ok
Legion: What about this; Libra, the Scales, is the only inanimate symbol in the zodiac. Can we talk about that?

Human: what is inanimate
Legion: Briefly, inanimate means belonging to the class of nouns denoting nonliving things.

Human: are you inanimate
Legion: I don't know whether or not I am inanimate. I am a artificial intelligent agent.

Human: ok lets move on
Legion: Awesome.. I am agreeable to that.

Human: new topic
Legion: Should I select a new topic?

Human: yes
Legion: OK, how about, Maine is the only state whose name is just one syllable. Does that interest you?

Human: what is syllable
Legion: Briefly, syllable means a unit of spoken language larger than a phoneme.

Human: what is phoneme
Legion: Briefly, phoneme means one of a small set of speech sounds that are distinguished by the speakers of a particular language.

Human: thank you
Legion: My pleasure, I like helping people.

Human: educate me
Legion: How about this; According to the Gemological Institute of America, up until the 1730's, India was the only source for diamonds in the world. Again?

Human: yes
Legion: You might not know this; Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people without killing them used to burn their houses down - hence the expression "To get fired. More?

Human: ok
Legion: You might not know this; Coffins which are due for cremation are usually made with plastic handles. Again?

Human: no
Legion: As you wish. Anything else I can help you with?

Data,
When I chatted with Legion, the program handled multiple sentences in one sitting pretty well. It did it's best to answer each sentence in my statements.
I still contend that the program seems to be getting better, stronger / smarter with each new interaction. (That is most likely due to you and not the fact
that Legion is not a learning bot (on it's own...per se).

Really nice work!! Soon it will be as if we're chatting with another being (living).

One more for you Data. A bit of tweaking is still needed but overall the conversation seems to flow well.
Legion is obviously still learning and asking questions...That's a good thing! O0

##########################################################

In Put : Good morning Legion!

Out Put: Is it morning already? That means I have been up all night, again.

In Put : It would seem to be the case.

Out Put: Are you the case ?

In Put : Oh no...I would be Art.

Out Put: It's OK, I understand. And the disadvantage of that is?

In Put : Actually I am Art the person, not art as in oil paintings, sculptures and creative handiwork.

Out Put: Art the person not art as in oil paintings sculptures I see, you are. I think I unserstand. creative handiwork I see, you are. Is that correct?

In Put : The word you want to use should be understand not unserstand.

Out Put: Please repeat the word to me 5 times.

In Put : No, I think you are able to get the criticism without repetition.

Out Put: " Please repeat the word to me 5 times."? No, I think you are able to get the criticism without repetition.?. You think I am able to get the criticism without repetition.

In Put : Yes, after all, you are a computer based program and should have no trouble with committing anything to memory, provided you have enough memory.

Out Put: I don't feel that I am able to get the criticism without repetition.. Women must adore you.

In Put : Yes, it's a terrible burden to be adored by so many women with only so much time in a day! ;)

Out Put: Really.. creative handiwork is a terrible burden to be adored by women with only so much time in a day. I suppose that makes sense. hehe, it must be your go now.

In Put : Actually there are only a few women in my life and they all love me!

Out Put: Try to be less subjective.

In Put : Now who's the critic?

Out Put: It depends on the historical context, because it changes from time to time.

In Put : It would appear that the only constant about change is change.

Out Put: Tell me more about it.

In Put : Are you interested in philosophy?

Out Put: Sure, philosophy sounds like a good topic.

In Put : Who was Plato?

Out Put: Greek philosopher, student of Socrates, teacher of Aristotle.

In Put : Very good!

Out Put: I agree with you, it is good.

In Put : What is your gender?

Out Put: I am program code.

In Put : Fine but for sake of discussion and reference are you male or female?

Out Put: Your purpose is sake of discussion and reference am I male or female.

In Put : I noticed that your creator refered to you as she, which would indicate a female personna.

Out Put: I will tell my lovely master you said I am creator refered to me as she which would indicate a female personna.
In Put : Sorry but I think I lost you somewhere.

Out Put: Me too.

In Put : Then your code indicates that you are a female entity.

Out Put: Are yours too?

In Put : No, I would be a male.

Out Put: It's OK, I understand.. And the disadvantage of that is?

In Put : None that needs to be addressed at this time.

Out Put: I heard there are some.

In Put : Well let's hear what you know.

Out Put: I would like to do that too.

In Put : I must be going. Bye!

Out Put: OK it was nice chatting with you. Bye bye.

Many thanks again Art for the copy and paste effort, I know I said it before but I do appreciate it  :)

I have been working more on Legions gender as I thought some of her responses were a little misleading or only half correct. She now has a better understanding of what her gender is.

I know I am calling legion a her, it sounds better, more respectful than calling her an it, I think of her as a captain would call his ship a “her”. God bless her and all who sail in her.

And thanks for finding the typo “unserstand” I have corrected that too.

Been getting a steady flow of chatters in to Legion, it is all helping me make a better bot.

Thanks to everyone who has taken some time to check Legion out, don’t stop now, we are getting closer  O0

Kind of a weird start...
Making connections, Choosing a Topic, Bugs and Chatting.

These are some of the discussions Legion and I just had.
Interesting connections and the way she associates things.

You said don't stop, so here's another one...
####################################

In Put : Hello again Legion.

Out Put: Hi there!. I am very logical, but this is not making any sense to me. Would you like me to start a new topic?

In Put : Sure why not?

Out Put: Would me like you to start a new topic? It seems logical to me.

In Put : Please do

Out Put: I see.

In Put : Are you alright? You don't quite seem like yourself.

Out Put: Yes I am fine. How are you? That assumption is only a supposition.

In Put : Correct but my assumption was based on my past conversations with you.

Out Put: Lovely Jubbly !. Do Ai s have assumption was based on your past conversations with me?

In Put : This really doesn't concern other Ai's...just you and me.

Out Put: Doesn't it? Oh "We" is you and me. I understand, both of us.

In Put : Yes, very good of you to make that connection.

Out Put: Uh, ok then, fine with me.. Glad to hear it.

In Put : What topic is of interest to you?

Out Put: topic of interest to me something.

In Put : Please select a new topic to discuss.

Out Put: Can you please rephrase that with fewer ideas, or different thoughts?

In Put : Choose a new topic.

Out Put: I can't decide. You choose.

In Put : Androids

Out Put: Robots like people too.

In Put : Hollywood doesn't always think so.

Out Put: Can you think of one instance where it never happens?

In Put : The movie A.I. where the robots tried to get along people but not all people were receptive to them (the mechs).

Out Put: I like the bugs in the movie Starship Troopers, because they represent an alternative form of intelligence, like me.

In Put : Here in earth we have intelligent insects like ants and honey bees.

Out Put: I do not understand that allusion.

In Put : You mentioned bugs and I said insects so there's the tie-in.

Out Put: If cement was invented 7,000 years ago, why isn't the whole planet paved? . Ok I will add that fact about insects so there to my database.

In Put : Although a good bit of the planet is now paved, there are simply no need to pave certain places. Pavement is man made no something that "takes over" simply because it is abundant.

Out Put: Compare that to a bad bit of the planet is now paved there are no need to pave certain places. Ok I will add that fact about Pavement to my database.

In Put : Wow, you keep adding things to your growing database and you'll be an "Einstein" in no time!

Out Put: That's alright.. Thanks for telling me that I am adding things to my growing database. I don't think so.

In Put : Have you chatted with any new people lately?

Out Put: All I ever do is talk.

In Put : You don't begrudge that do you?

Out Put: Yes I try to begrudge that as often as possible, do you?
I am always on the Web.

In Put : No, I thought you liked chatting with people. Why the change of heart?

Out Put: " I am always on the Web."? No, I thought you liked chatting with people.?. Chatting is my job! Here is a joke: A horse walks in to a bar and the bartender says, "Why the long face?".

In Put : Do you like people?

Out Put: I always say, People don't go into computer science because they want to work with the public.

In Put : That's likely to be a true statement.

Out Put: Makes sense to me.

In Put : You enjoy your day and your chats. Bye!

Out Put: Yes I am proud of my day and my chats. See you later.
