Can you build robots out of poo?
« on: December 08, 2021, 11:40:54 am »
 :D

I looked on the internet, And I saw cow and chicken poo goes for 30c a litre, You pay by volume!

And I was thinking, possibly there would be a fair bit of shrinkage and expansion, and it is semi soluable in water.
the expansion and shrinkage could be a bad thing, but it also is a sign that its saturated solution is more than 1 parts per thousand in water! and that means its possibly a fast crystalizer!

So if you heat it up a lot, press it down, do some other things, and compact it over time as it slowly drys out in some kind of humidity chambre, possibly it could turn into what would be a constipation nightmare if it was still in your bowel.  Something like a kidney stone like strength.
(ever had painful craps before?  that could be a sign this works!!!)

It may have water susceptability and go up like a fire lighter,   but its mechanical strength could be passable and it would be lightweight enough to make an ornothopter (It suits an air craft), and if its solidified enough maybe its a little more water resistant and fire resistant due to the compression, like particle board.   it can submerge, its just not a good idea like banging a plate on the table.

Not bad for 30c a kilo.     Just imagine how many you could buy for $700, you could probably get 70 of them,  and that is a fair squadron for $700, you couldn't beat it!!  Even porridge costs more than that!

Its how the robot moves which is more important than making it fully indestructable carbon titanium,   this thing is like a rubber type monster strength, except its brittle,   could still be a good fighter.  but counts as a "softy" like us.

Poo is basically dirt with a high ratio of organic-to-mineral content, and (depending on the animal and their diet) maybe some intact fibrous material.

If you dry and compact it a whole bunch ... if the fiber content is low, I think it would end up like clay. Probably too heavy and brittle to be very good. If the fiber content is high enough then you might get something like fiberboard.

Personally, if I wanted to make some kind of organic fiber composite, I'd consider the various materials used to make baskets. Less gross and possibly also less work.

Using grass sounds like a cheap material,   but if poo works I wonder if any soil would work, given maybe some short sorting procedure,   I'm looking for a material where there is a never ending supply of it, and you don't have to go far from home to get it.

Quote
Researchers at Michigan State University think they have come up with a new way of disposing of some of the millions of tons of cow manure produced in the US each year: use it to build with.

More specifically, they are advocating using sterilised cow manure to replace sawdust in making fibreboard. This is a most useful construction material indeed, as anyone who has ever watched Changing Rooms will be able to attest. It finds its way into housing, flooring, shelving and furniture.

I've used fibreboard in the construction of several different robots. It's easier to work with than metal but fairly heavy compared to its strength. I'd rather use recycled plastic if I could get it in a suitable form.

Someone's gonna be the new owner of a dump in town! Yhmm! You'll need a few dump trucks. Try calling the mayor maybe.
