Migrating to an SSD
« on: April 10, 2017, 04:46:03 pm »
I found this to be informative and nicely demonstrated. It seems more and more people are slowly making this change.

In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Seems like good advice, well explained - quite liked that Icybox.

I didn't clone mine, but did a straight OS install to the SSD from a USB stick. I probably just moved things I needed onto a USB drive and transferred them over. This did mean I had to reinstall programs though obviously.

Later I moved over to a M.2 SSD which looks like a RAM stick and just slots into the motherboard. So my OS is on that and frequently used programs because it is very fast.

As I've collected SSDs I plug them in wherever they will fit, I have three regular SSDs in there too. Some cases have mount points for SSD - mine has one, but with adaptors the other two SSD are sat in old HDD bays.

Much less heat and noise (none) than HDD, and of course faster by a long way. Wouldn't go back. Upgrading to SSD is one of the most significant upgrades you can make.

I think it would be fair to say that most computer savvy geeks would recommend a clean install of Windows over migrating the OS, especially with SSD. During installation Windows detects the SSD and runs the setup accordingly, turning on TRIM and enabling other optimisations for SSD.

The guy hinted in the video about this, there must be a follow-up vid.

I can see this method has a place for people with pre built PC's and no "hard copy" of Windows, fair enough but if they have a copy of Windows then it would be better to use that and do a clean install.

So I've been told.

Pretty good vid though  :)
