MASSIVE PROJECT IDEA - Learning cryptology AI
« on: November 02, 2016, 01:08:42 am »
Hello, I literally just registered into these forums with a grand idea.

An AI that could learn how ciphers work. Using an AI we could teach it transposition, Cesar shift ciphers and many mathematical equations in order to solve the legendary "Kryptos" code. The 4th part of it has never been solved.

Now, I am no programmer but I was wondering if any one would want to take the job? I mean its a pretty big project but I just wanted to ask.

I don't know if its even possible to do this but It was worth it to ask.

I can guarantee you that it has already been tried, and tried by people with far more expertise and resources to bring to bear on the problem than anyone here has got. Even if they succeeded we would not know. CIA staff had already solved the first three panels of the puzzle years before anyone solved it publicly, and without even using a computer. I daresay NSA staff solved them even earlier, but they would never admit it, it's not in their nature. The FSB (formerly known as the KGB) would have had all the solutions in their possession even before the statue was unveiled to the public.

If you are seriously interested in finding a solution to this problem, learn computer programming. It's a wonderful pastime and a great career, and nowadays you can access all the lessons and resources online, for free.

I would think the NSA or other agencies of that nature would certainly be most interested if such a program was developed and proven to work! More than interested indeed!!

When that black car arrives out front and the men in black knock on your door, you'd best agree to go quietly with them.
In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

I'm not sure you could have an AI "learn" how cyphers work. I'm sure you can train a neural net with examples to learn the pattern of one method of encryption, but there is no common pattern that all methods share (some are even graphical). It would probably be easier to program all known methods directly and brute force one's way through it. To be honest I've programmed an anagram decryptor before and it was pretty boring, so unless there's a treasure chest at the end of it, I can't say I'd spend my time on it.
I think Kryptos' fourth message is just a recruitment advert, and that many have secretly solved it before.

You mention "we", but if you can't program, what would you contribute?

CO2 retains heat. More CO2 in the air = hotter climate.
