I think I might have created an AI.
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:41:02 am »
My website now offers my free 'I Story' creator at:

http://richard-a-patterson.com/i_story

It might be an AI as it seems to create poetic plots that are interesting, original and useful. Currently it creates 18 sextillion stories. That is as many as the number of of grains of sand on the beaches of the world. A sample of what it now does is given in this random poem written as a paragraph:

‘It is a dull world, right now, during this period of healing and in this far distant place there is a poet. The poet teaches you only instinct while hiding from you an alien. However soon afterwards, as you fear, the resulting propaganda will be effective in increasing your lifespan - Your story is already largely unknown’.

Any feedback will be appreciated. Does it satisfy conditions?

Thanks, Richard Patterson.

I have two thoughts on this posting of yours.

It is sort of a form of Computer Aided Poem creation and with that sort of an AI in a very broad sense of the word / meaning. It is nice to see some of the output actually makes a bit of sense.

While I don't always agree with self promotion for the money thing being the bottom line, I also feel that you are indeed entitled to make a tidy profit for your labors.

So to me, this is not necessarily SPAM but rather a novel approach to computer creation of readable verse.

There were many programs in the past 30 years that could generate a poetry form called Haiku (I believe) which seems somewhat disconnected when being read but I think it was supposed to inspire a more Zen-like atmosphere than not.

Anyhow, Richard, good luck with your program! All the best,

In the world of AI, it's the thought that counts!

Well, when we go to Google and type in 'define: Artificial Intelligence', it says 'The theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence'.

AI is certainly very broad, and in this sense, the output from the program suggests intelligence.  But (without meaning any offense of course) what is to separate a poem generator from a chatbot other than a number of extra or different parameters?   It seems to me artificial intelligence is just that, artificial, and the term can be applied to a number of intelligently designed systems and/or programs.  The way I see it, once there is a science fiction version of AI, a "consciousness", then that would simply be an intelligence.  Until then, AI can really be applied to whatever gives the appearance of intelligence, or "learns", or whatever else essentially subjectively can be ruled as "intelligent".  So yes, I'd agree if you called it AI.  People just need to know to ask themselves 'what is AI?'

AI as far as I am educated is a software or hardware entity that mimics human action or produces an output that could be consodered intelligable in human terms. The scifi idea my be the holy grail, however iny opinion there areany stepping stones in the way, all are AI at different levela.
