Robotic Archer Hits Bull's Eye
« on: September 26, 2010, 02:35:31 pm »

...a robot called iCub demonstrates some impressive archery skills.

What's remarkable about the robot isn't just its headdress, but how it learns over time to improve its aim until it's able to hit the bull's-eye....

Not the most exciting video perhaps, but this must be quite difficult to achieve...

Nice article Freddy. It would be interesting to see whether the bot could repeat the precision after being turned away then locating the target by turning around on it's own.

Good find!

There's one more robot, flipping pancakes. This is posted by the same user.

It would be nice to see this robot flipping pancakes of different size and thickness.

I don't get the concept of "Demonstration of task via Kinesthetic teaching." Can somebody explain?

If my understanding is correct here, "Kinesthetic teaching" simply refers to an operator positioning the arm in the correct manner, and producing the desired motion manually, while the computer records the positional data in real time. Then the computer "mimics" the position and motion of the arm, making minor adjustments till the desired motion is achieved.

But what I don't get here is if somebody is moving that arm, can't the robot read out the previous info (i mean angles and all the stuff) and repeat it? I am not into robotics, but it looks fairly simple.

Is it like I teach it the flipping for one thing, say pancakes. And then by reinforced learning it can flip other things, like omlettes?

Sorry for asking a silly questions, but its better to get the doubts cleared :) Please correct me if I am wrong.
