What can you do if things go belly up with an OEM version of XP and only the one install ?

The thing with OEM is that it can be installed more than once but must be on the same PC, changing hardware can trigger it to ask for activation again, personally I’ve always managed to re-install it no problem, but two activations very close together, hmm I don’t know, it might not like it, its true. :'(

If it doesn’t activate you would need to phone Bill  :king:, any time (24hours a day 7 days a week) its ok he doesn’t mind, explain your predicament to him then ask politely  “can I please activate windows Bill”, then say “oh by the way did you know I really like MS and am looking forward to the next version of Windows which I will be recommending to all my friends”.

Then, step by step, do as Bill tells you and you’ll be back up and running in no time. O0

Then don’t forget to say ”thank you Bill” you might want to throw in a compliment or two of your own as well just in case you need to phone again.

Yeah, you’d have to phone Microsoft  ;D

lol  ;D

Thanks Data, I had a good laugh at that reply !

I always thought you got just one shot at OEM versions of XP, I didn't know you could install it again on  the same computer.

Basically, I needed XP for my Mum's machine and could only find OEM versions.  This was over a year ago and I just kept my fingers crossed nothing went wrong.  Seems I didn't need to worry so much.

Say the HD went wrong though, would that still be the 'same' PC ?

It’s the motherboard that’s the main thing it looks at..
HD’s are fine you can and I have changed them.

You can even change the motherboard but again you might have to phone.

Just to add, there is a huge grey area here,  when is a PC a PC, what part do you have to change to make a new PC? The whole OEM thing falls flat on its face when you look closely at it.

You now what I think, its just a way of selling windows cheaper, to people like me that build and sell them, we make a living, MS sell windows, user gets PC and support, we are all happy.

The letters OEM are there to frighten you.

Just an opinion.

I seem to remember reading somewhere you were allowed 5 hardware changes before XP asked for the activation again. However I never found that to be true. It certainly doesn't pay attention to HD changes, as I've changed and swapped HDs far more. I've also swapped sound cards, installed controller cards, memory, graphics cards, all without so much as a burp on computers. You will not get out of it for a motherboard/cpu swap as the activation code takes part of it's formula for it's makeup from the cpu. Once you get into the reactivation, if you have changed the cpu and tell M$ that, be prepared to fork up more money for a new license as they consider changing the CPU to be the equivalent of a different computer, even though everything else remains the same. Once you phone in and get a new activation, it will be a 25 digit and will contain no alphabetic characters, if I remember rightly. You best record it down somewhere or have a program that will go back in and get the number again, in case you ever have to do a reinstall.

Well that stopped the topic in its track.

errr...Here's a knife for your next attempt so that it might have a higher success rate. (grins)

The thing you have to realize about M$ is that it's a money maker. I've mentioned it before that it is the business licensing fees that pay the way, not the M$ tax to the computer user, who only pays once. This is why M$ will never be totally secure nor anything remotely close to it. Those businesses, especially the datamining businesses are paying not only licenses for the Win part but also development kits and other items to access your data. If they can't get to your data then they have real demanding reason to continue with M$ as opposed to Linux. In the interest of continuing to keep the money flowing, M$ will never totally secure Windows.

And the UPGRADES and PATCHES and FIXES will also Never stop...

Someone once said to build the very best software with all the possible bells and whistles any person could ever want and then some.

Now take away 40% of those bells & whistles...in fact reduce it back to slightly better than a bare bones package. Now we'll sell it. Every so ofter we'll offer some of these missing "features" as "Upgrades."
And so on...etc....  We'll make a killing because in the minds of humans, they always want to have the best or the most popular or whatever the latest, greatest thing is. Silly humans...This is going to be sweet!

And so continues another continuing saga of "As the Upgrade Turns."
