Windows 10
« on: April 04, 2015, 05:51:55 pm »
Well...how wonderful that the folks at Redmond, Washington are going to let us upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.x to Windows 10 for FREE!! That's right! One year Free! And you'll get to use Cortana who'll be your helpful assistant!

Wait? One year free?
Yep
Then what?
Then you purchase a license for a yet undisclosed price.
Really?
Yep
Then what?
Then you own your license to use Windows 10.
For how long?
Until the next major upgrade.
Which will be when exactly?
Can't say.
Why not?
Because only those bright folks at Redmond, Washington know for sure.
Really?...but when it comes out maybe it will also be free.
Right! Did it come with Office and all those other neat MS programs?
Sure well, they were a trial, then we had to buy them.
Kind of like with Windows 10 huh?
Yeah...I guess so.
Dad always said there's no such thing as a free lunch (or Operating System from MS).
yeah...go figure....

Is that right Art, win 10 will be free for a year then once the year is up we have to pay to carry on using it ?

I've been around the web trying to find a definitive answer but I can't, all I'm finding is "Free to upgrade from 7 and 8 for a year". Which isn't the same thing.

Could you post a link please sir.

OK so then logic would dictate that after a year, something else will happen.
What do you think that would be?
Choices:

1) They GIVE us Windows10 Free for the rest of our lives, because they like us.
2) They Require users to Pay for a License or your computer will either slow down or become inoperative.
3) Your Free version erases itself from your hard drive and cloud.(not hardly)
4) They offer users a Subscription based service from which to choose & use. (I'd really hate that).

Actually Data, my previous posting was simply meant to be a bit of satire about MS not really detailing how their Windows 10 (1 year) release will actually work.

It does, however, and was intended to make people think a bit about just what they might be in store for.

Whenever one sees the word "Free", one should look all around and on both sides of that word to see what else, if anything, might also be attached. O0

I'm glad to see my efforts stirred the pot, so to speak!  O0

I have the feeling Windows is going the way of Google Android (Free), they will probably make their money from Apps purchased through the store.

Time will tell I guess  :)

Following this and I learned you need a Microsoft account to sign up for the upgrade.  Neweggs has an advertisement for pre release windows 10,  you can sign up to be notified when the product is available. Someone has written free is available to the first 10,000 people. Computers are being sold with of offers of free upgrades to windows 10.   It may be a good time to get a new computer,

One can choose Microsoft or NewEgg or perhaps a different source for notification of an upgrade.

I signed in with MS to be notified. Doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to swallow the pill just because it's handed to me.

There is some reviewing and research to do before I take it.

Must read the fine print and look ahead to see if the end justifies the means...or vice versa.

Windows 7 disks? What are they? Hmmm....

My computer came with Windows 7 Premium installed but no Windows 7 disks.
The computer has a separate partition that's used for recovery in case of a failure.

Funny, but if the drive goes south (fails), then all is lost anyway!

Some of these alternate methods seem a bit flawed in theory to me (and maybe flawed is practice as well).

I do have all my goodies backed up on an external drive. Not quite the same but close.

I'm still apprehensive about this Free for one year, thing. I do think they will offer it as a subscription based service.

After one year, you can pay a one time fee to use Windows 10 and get free updates, paches, etc. but this is just my conjecture, not actual fact. We will have to wait either for a definitive article / statement or until we get our hands on it to see for ourselves.

That is why I have always recommended building your own PC or get someone to build it for you, there are some nice advantages to doing that, choosing your preferred hardware and getting a Windows disk for example.

Valid point Art, I will add to that conjecture if I may.
It could even be on a year to year subscription base, pay a fee every 12 months to keep receiving the up-dates, I wouldn't be too unhappy with that if the price was right. My customers might take some convincing but if that's what we have to do to keep using Windows.

There is always Linux for those that can't stand MS and Windows.

One of the things I learned is Win 10 includes the AI Cortana  and being interested in AI I looked for Cortana.  I was able to find Briana the Cortana Alternative for Desktop PC.    The link  is                                                                         http://www.brainasoft.com/braina/cortana-for-pc.html
I've downloaded and am using the free version which has limited features, a Pro version is offered for $29 / year.  The free version includes speech recognition for 1 Month.  The pro version is advertised to have very deep learning.  I was just able to get the weather United States has to be included..  She was able to open Zabaware.  Next is to try the
speech recognition and see if it works outside of Briana.

To be honest I'm very happy with Windows 7. I'm hoping my most used programs will not become obsolete when 10 hits us.

I am looking forward to the Holo glasses though very much. I'd like to do some work with those.
