New "FREE" graphics software
« on: May 22, 2011, 06:50:23 pm »
From those cool folks at www.pixologic.com we now have
Sculptris Alpha 5!

It's a push, pull, manipulate polygons into various shapes, creatures or
whatever your mind desires. These are the same people that gave us Zbrush.

I made this little alien creature in less than 3 minutes using only one of the
many brush types available. You can also vary the size, shape and strength
of each brush. A brush will usually react two ways (right or left click on mouse)
to get different results.

Way cool program and supplied help files as well.

I played with it a lot this morning, and I'm a little disappointed, because it crashes quite frequently. I'll look at their support pages, and see if there's a "fix" for it, or at least a bug reporting system. What I was able to do with it when it wasn't crashing is really great! I just wish it went more than a minute before crashing. :(

Dave,

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit and found the program to be quite stable in that I only received one issue and it was partly my fault.
I overdid the pinching and in an attempt to undo by using the other mouse button, I think it simply had too many calculations
to perform before it finally got tired or wound up a bit too tightly.

Other than that, I really had no probs. Sorry....

I experienced exactly the same thing while using not only the pinch tool, but also the inflate tool as well. My biggest difficulties, however, were in trying to import OBJ files that were created by other modeling apps. If they're too large, or too detailed, the program crashes. :( I was trying to see if I could work with Morti, and the program didn't like it much.

Well, it's still an alpha, not even a beta, what do you expect?

Looks promising though.  Can you apply colours and textures to the models ?

I have yet to figure out how to map the textures to the model, but you can "paint" the model with a repeating pattern texture. I'll have to visit the forums at the site, and see if there are any "work-arounds" for the crashing issues. It is a fun program to play with. :)

Yes, it does export and import saved obj files without incident.(as far as my experiments indicate)

I downloaded and tried and tossed and forgot why.
Then downloaded free Wings3d (also recommended by Art) which proved best for me.
