Go board design

What do you guys think of the design I made for the board game I'm working on:


It's a basic marble board, nothing fancy for this first release. The board in the screenshot is fully functional though.

Looks good. If I were being picky and it wasn't too much work, I would give each counter a random rotation to make the board look more natural.

I was kind of curious about the 8 X 9 setting in the image. I thought a GO board was typically 18 X 18 "squares".
It does look nice. Will it be a computer against the player, a two person Internet / Network playable or two person
on the same computer version?

If you hit a snag, you should consult with Bruce Wilcox as he is a recognized authority on GO computer games.

Ahh, yes, turning the marble stones a little. I can do that. (a 'counter' does mean 'a stone', right? Haven't heard that before  :-[ )

You can select the size of the board from 5 to 25 stones. I read on this website (which was a great tutorial, cause I haven't played this game very much I have to admit) that a starter board can be 9*9 and goes up to 19*19.  But since the board size doesn't really matter for the algorithms that I have in mind (you can theoretically even change the board during game-play, though I'm probably going to disable this, cause what do you do when the board gets smaller and stones fall off? Don't want to recalculate all the scores again), I sort of figured to make the board-size variable.

I've also been thinking about that. The first version, will definitely only be you versus the computer. Making a version that allows for 2 human players shouldn't be much of a problem to add (basically, it would be a case of disabling a bunch of code + add some network interactivity). If there is an interest for this, it can be added (sort of depends). There's another possibility though. Perhaps a little background: I plan to make the AI trainable. That is, at first it wont have much of a strategy and will basically do random things. The idea is that the AI starts to mimic how you play (this will be very simple at first, I've got various algorithms in mind ranging from simple to a little harder). It could perhaps be interesting to see how the AI's of various people compete against each other.
