At the Blender site one can find a link to a pretty nice software
package called: Meshmixer.

It is a great tool to add to one's graphic arsenal and although
FREE, can do many surprising things.

Watch the videos and you'll see what I mean.
There is a version for Windows 32 & 64 and (shudder) MAC whatever.
