Nice Free Software
« on: August 11, 2006, 12:02:26 am »
I've used Serif Software in the past, I bought their Desktop Publishing proggy a year or two ago and it was a nice package for the price.  They always give away freebies of older software and although basic this looks like a handy bunch of programs  :

Cool! I'll have to check this out. It's not often that one gets good stuff for free. :) I've been using OpenOffice (openoffice.org) for awhile now myself. Reminds me, I should check for updates.

Yes, the price is right but notice the FAQ with each product. They show a comparison between version 6 or their enhances version 8, or the 4 then the 6. The good news is that even with the better version their prices are very reasonable! This company has been around for quite a while and their software can get the job done even if it doesn't cost as much as the "big boys." :afro

Fuzzie,
I used Open Office on my Linux machine and loved it. It was a work alike to MS Office for all intents!

Freddy,
Good find...thanks for sharing!

New company to me but looks good.
I'll be checking out all 5 of the programs.

Freddy, good looking out.

Great find Freddy.  :afro

I just finished downloading some of them.
Need a variety of graphics design and edit
software now that I have a couple of projects
to work on. It will give me a chance to see
what works better for certain things.  :smiley

Cool, I saw you picked up the archaeologist skin project over on zaba, nice one, I'm pleased for you.  Keep at it and good luck as always  :afro

Take a look at the new 3D Modeller I posted about as well, I think you will like it.

Yeah,  I got a $5 donation to my web-site fund out of it. Paid my site fee this month.  :afro

I saw your post on the modelling software. It models using nurbs. Not much good for
modeling human meshes for use in real-time on the fly animation engines.  :cry
That's one of the projects I'm working on with GrantNZ, laackejim & hologenicman
over at the VHumans site. Trying to develop a new cross platform A.I.

BTW.,       :zdg_flag_happybday   in advance.

Gamer,

Have you checked out Wings3D?
It was a work a like to Nendo.

Polygon based as opposed to NURBS and quite a capable program (if it's still offered).

Did I mention that WINGS 3D is / was FREE?? OK...Well, it was!

Thanks Art.  :smiley  I'll have to take a look at it, if Wings3D
is still offered.

I remember trying out the free trial of nendo some time back,
don't remember too much though about it's format output or
what programs it would import into.

Winds 3D is still free, it looks like a capable program but it's .obj importer doesn't import properly - at lease for hi poly count meshes.  Might be fine on simpler models.  So far, just about every program I have used (lots!) has some kind of .obj quirk.  One of the few that has caused me least problems is the ancient True Space 3.2 ( also free btw now).

Goes to show that sometimes it pays to look at older software sometimes for import and export when they had less formats to deal with and probably spent more time on those kind of routines.

Ah the good old days hehe.  :wink

And thanks Thom, I only realised myself it is tomorrow lol

Happy B'day!! Do try to stay out of trouble if possible.

Personally I prefer the 3DS format instead of OBJ. Most progs
can / will export objects in that format as well.

Nendo has also been revived by it's parent company. I've seen
some incredible work done with Nendo but as mentioned, for
the money, Wings 3D is a (free) bargain. :zdg_drunk2
