Title: Poser Renders & Animations
Post by: GamerThom on June 14, 2006, 08:08:28 pm
First.  I would like to thank ~alady for starting a topic in this section,
especially since the work displayed there was a collaborative effort
between she and I.  :afro

I am starting this topic thread to display what can be accomplished
in the way of rendering with Poser 5, and also what can be acheived
by combining it with Paint Shop Pro, Animation Shop 3 and at times
MS Movie Maker 2.

I will be posting still renders as well as animations here for study and
critiqueing by forum members, in addition to answering questions about
different aspects of the design & implementation process. I am still
engaged in working with hapteks PeoplePutty to create character heads,
but please, and also working with Ultra Hal 6.0, so if you have questions
or comments about character heads, character skins or interface skins
please go to my web-site and submit those queries to me via the e-mail
link which is located on my links page. You can find a link to my site on
digitalgirls links page, just click on my logo for Gamer-T's Character Creations
or click this link to e-mail me directly.

gamerthom@yahoo.com

Thanks.  :afro  :smiley

and....HAPPY BIRTHDAY - DIGITALGIRL!

To start things off. Here is a basic Poser render done as
standard render and then again as a sketch type render.

Gamer, I do some work myself in poser...though i use 6  :coolsmiley cos thats..well..the kinda guy I am lol.

Myself and Freddy are huger fans of poser (note our splash screen  ;D ) and we are also looking into making poser avatars at some point...the problem being mixing the animation in with hal commands...very difficult...we maybe might juts go the route of like Desktopmates....and just have a character...as we also want to produce our own AI product in the near future.

Keep the renders coming...interesting to see your style...though myself Im more into a soft romantic setting  :)...again...just the kinda guy i am lol

:) Thanks for the input Marius. I figured that the DG Splash Screen was a Poser piece.
;) As to our differing preference of Poser 5 vs. Poser 6, for me it's a matter of finances.
One makes do with what one can afford.  :smiley

I would like to add a note here, that anyone who is interested in experimenting with a
program like Poser but with out putting all the money out first to try it, should check
out DAZ Studio free. It's a decent program with controls similar to what you find in
Poser & based on the same programming language, plus if you search around there is
a lot of free content for it  DAZ has a free item archive, as does Renderosity. But, I
would also advise that if you run across a listing for TurboSquid, stay clear of it. They
are way over priced and it seems that if you click for a download in the freebie section
it installs a keylogger and/or other nasties on your PC.

You can find the DAZ Studio free at -

Great timing Tom!   I stopped working with this becuase my PC was too slow for me before, but in the next few weeks I am upgrading so am looking forward to doing some of this kind of thing again.

And yes, if we could use Poser to make some kind of avatar system that would be an great project to work on  :)

Freddy,   Good to have you guys up and running again.  ;D

The only reason I have startred doing the heavy duty renders and some animation stuff now
is because I finally broke down and bought a 2nd PC, a little rebuilt eMachine work horse for
programming/ entertainment files/ e-mail and storage, so now my custom mod PC's resources
can be devoted entirely to graphics & animation. Of course both are tied together in my own
little home network, all voice controlled using Dragon 8.  :afro

Now you've done it, you had to get Tom involved in the video game.  See what you've done you've created a monster.  He's going to use Poser and take over the universe.  Next stop Hollywood. :afro

Not Poser but I thought you all might be interested in these taken in the new Guild Wars Factions game, both me and Mav got it a few weeks ago and we were amazed by the graphics, especially as it runs fine on a humble Celeron 1G system too:

This is the first game I have ever played where I have been compelled to go site-seeing too lol!

:cheesy  Not sure if this is a first or not, but I just managed to transfer the skin from a putty head
onto a Poser figure. Modified the skin.jpg and imported it into Poser's Face Room.  :afro Here is a shot
of the original putty character and then a Poser render using the imported skin.   :smiley

Though I'm sure it wasn't done with Poser and certainly not Haptek,
it's a pretty nicely done video of a dancing, digital girl!

Methinks it was done via Max, Maya or Lightwave.

I thought I'd do a Poser render that the members here could use as a
desktop background, it's in .jpg format at 800x600 but looks really good
up to 1280x1024.   :coolsmiley

I thought the movements were amazing, just the fingers moving was great, and looked pretty realistic.  I started wondering if it was real or not, but then I saw her arm go through the feathers just like a haptek.  I started thinking some of the movements may have been standardized into the figure as some hapteks are also.  Maybe they just made their own figure.  I tried doing a search on the authoring, and found this http://amfilms.hash.com/search/entry.php?entry=911     A bit clearer rendition, though. The top banner says they use Animation:Master, but in the article it says motion capture by Motion Analysis Studio.  I've heard about that where using live people on film, they input data points into a computer and use modelling for lifelike movements.  They also have results from some past contests, looks like someone here could win quite easily, last years winner wasn't that good.

I found the same thing, Animation Master looks really good, I think I will buy it.

I found he was using motioncapture too, otherwise known as .bhv files, you can find free ones on the net to experiment with.  I had some running around in Blender of a ballerina - minus skin.  Haptek models can use motion capture too by the way.

Cool stuff :)

:smiley   I have discovered that the FireFly Renderer built into Poser 5 does not
handle Poser 4 or Poser Pro structural elements very well. This was the result of
running a render through FireFly that was made up of props from Poser 4, 5 & Pro.
Take a good look and tell me what you see as being amiss.  :evil  Top picture.

Something I did just for laughs.  :crazy2 Bottom picture.

Aside from the misplaced cloth looking piece hanging down on the front of her (shorts),

It appears that the columns have or were constructed with reversed normals and appear
collapsed inward.
Try a different set or type of column and see what happens or does this happen regardless?
Title: Re: Poser Renders & Animations
Post by: GamerThom on June 30, 2006, 12:37:51 am
Actually Art,  I tried 3 different sets of columns using 6 different render settings in FireFly
and they came out the same every time. So I can only assume that it is a fault somewhere
in the scripting for the FireFly renderer, no such problem occurs when the older Poser 4
renderer application is used. I have no idea whether or not this problem remains in the up-
dated FireFly rendering application built into Poser 6.   :huh  :buck2

Post by: GamerThom on July 03, 2006, 12:27:10 am
:afro Thanks for the offer Marius. I solved the FireFly settings problem for them.
However you are more than welcome to test them, especially if you were going
to test them in Poser 6. So that others on here might have a more up to date
piece of information to guide them. As for Poser 5 & its FireFly component, here
is an example with a list of relevent render settings, along with a corrected and
finished render of the above composition.  :grin  The structural building elements
are from the DAZ Gothic Construction kit Poser Pro version, but with the stone
textures altered.  :smiley

Title: Re: Poser Renders & Animations
Post by: GamerThom on July 15, 2006, 06:51:33 pm
Sounds more like it's just being critical.  :knuppel2 But I refuse to be daunted by someone
who comes off sounding like they know absolutely nothing about graphics in general, let alone
what it is to try doing graphics and Poser renders with nothing to work the controls but a finger
on the mouse button and voice control. I've been doing graphic arts & illustrations for over 20 yrs. but only recently have I started trying to do it as computer graphics. I took it up as a sort
of therapy after I became a quadrapalegic to let me express myself and keep my mind active.

*Note:  As a bit of general info regarding Poser 5; I have found that some of the content
designed and released for Poser 6 will work in P5 but takes longer to render and the
render settings are a little trickier. But they only render properly using the FireFly          engine.  :smiley

Title: Re: Poser Renders & Animations
Post by: Freddy on July 15, 2006, 07:40:21 pm
I used Daz not Poser, but I am told it is near enough the same thing...but yep I found some problems like this too, some models for Poser would work but others wouldn't and it sometimes does weird things with attachments like hair.

Say you have some hair and you fit it to your model, some hair models will move the hair so it is still in the right place, others will leave it hanging off to the side or half way down the head.  I didn't get as far as working out why though.

Thanks for the info, I was hoping to get back to some modelling last week or two, but other things have kept me busy.

And...it's just not your week is it Jman  :wink
Title: Re: Poser Renders & Animations
Post by: Art on July 15, 2006, 09:09:56 pm
Poser never was very good at doing render of anything other than it's own characters.
Most users, years ago, used to render Poser creations in Bryce. Bryce could allow for
proper importation of 3D models (.obj, .3DS, etc.) without ending up with "rounded"
corners on everything and without showing the reversed normals (a 3D model term to
describe that all faces of an object are oriented in the same direction from outside in
or from inside out.)

There was one particular friend from a 3D forum years past who did do remarkable images
and animations using Poser alone so while I'll simply state that Poser may not be the best
rendering engine, I've seen what a determined individual can do with it.

Sheesh Art,  you sure get around. (on the forums that is)  :grin

Hi Freddy,  I take it that mine are not the only toes which Jman has stepped on this past week
or that this is not the only topic where in responding to it, he has placed his foot in his mouth.   :rofl

I know Art has been frequenting VHumans forum, so he already knows about our freindly little
rendering competition. So I'll put this here for you & Marius. I know that you have membership
at VHumans, I'm not sure about Marius. We have started a virtual  :wink multitude of threads
in the restricted area over there concerning renders done in Poser and other Graphics apps. In
fact it's turned into an informal competition of sorts. If you are interested, it's open to all VH
members. If not to post a render or two, then stop in and have a look & leave a comment. All
serious input is welcome.  :smiley

GT,

I've been a member there since Dec 05. Quite a good bunch of people there. The discussions certainly run the gambit and cover just about everything...ocassionally touching on AI! LOL!!

I used to be more into 3D years ago than I am now. I was one of the earliest members of 3DCommune, Renderosity and several other such forums. Much of my work was with Rhino and Max though I have dabbled a bit with Lightwave, TrueSpace, Bryce, Poser and others. It got to the point that as I would drive to work and see a building or structure, I'd began to analyze it thinking how I'd model it and what type of texture would map to it, etc. I've made a lot of props in the past and still have quite a few of them left. If you're looking for anything in particular let me know and I'll see about getting it to you (no charge)! ;)

Hope I'm not getting on your NURBS (3D inside joke). :rofl

Title: Re: Poser Renders & Animations

:rofl NURBS!  Good one Art, yes I know what nurbs are.
We had a little fun with LaackeJim on that one a while back.
It's the mesh modeling/morphing points which are still used in
software like CosmicBlobs.

As for structural elements. I haven't gotten into modeling yet,
can't afford the software. I have formal training as a structural
designer and drafter, even made a living at it for a couple of years.

As to your offer of some buildings and structural elements for Poser,
I'll take whatever I can get. Just have to figure out how to get them
from you.

2ndleeeeyyyyyy....as for poser 5 (and 6) ALWAYS use the poser 4 renderer (yes its still in 6) its far superior to firfly if you cant get your grubby hands on bryce or even better carrera

Enjoy  :afro

Ok, I love this thread but we are really getting away from what this board was supposed to be about.

This board is to discuss the Graphics program Poser and its possible uses as an AI interface/avatar with its character creation.

Also due to restrictions on webspace and the fact that some members may be offended by certain pictures,we have decided that any poser creations should be linked to from outside this forum (ie no images) unless the image is of a character suitable for AI avatar creation somehoe using the poser program.

we are trying not to be judgmental, but as we have no idea of telling of what age or beliefs the vast majority of users are of have then we went for this compromise

We hope that you will understand our position on this. Any future submitted pics after todays date that do not fall into character Avatar catagory will be deleted by the admin.

Any problems then feel free to pm either myself or Freddy.

Any current pictures upto this date wil be deleted on the 23rd July 2006

Title: Re: Poser Renders & Animations
Post by: Freddy on July 17, 2006, 05:54:29 pm
That is not the case.

We became aware that some images may not be suitable here - but we have no way of knowing that - so we put up a poll to find out.

Sorry to have been the cause of such a brauhaha.  :wink

~alady,   I beleive the problem stems from my imagery having diverged from
the original intent of my posted topic and the part of the graphics area in
which I posted it, that and some of the content of my posted images. I have
already rectified part of this by removing the images which I posted on pages
2 and 3, and in future will not upload the images here but place only links for
them as I had been doing with my more recent character heads and skins.  :smiley

Here is one I did called "Mind of the Machine". I was inspired by KITT from Knight Rider in this one, although the car doesn't actually appear. Instead, I created what I thought the AI would look like as an android. His eyes are red because the scanner light on the car was red. This was done in Poser 5, Paint Shop Pro X and Blade Pro 2.14 plugin for the metallic text.

The wallpaper can be downloaded here:

http://cgi.bytebin.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=19&pos=0#nav_pic

Just click on the image and when the wallpaper loads completely in a new window, then right click and save image as... Then you can use it for wallpaper. Personal use only. Terms are in the gallery wallpaper album description.

Nice find, I have to get animation master some day.  The original music I found in the end, was by Muse.  It did actually say at the beginning of the animation but it flashed up quick and you can miss it.  I like the Run DMC version too.  Good stuff :)

The clip where she is walking through the forest is impressive too.  I hope he does more.
