Making a T-Shirt in Blender
« on: May 10, 2010, 04:47:59 pm »
Apologies for not being around much, but I see the forum is pretty quiet at the moment - must be that nice weather we are having.

So what have I been up to ?  Well I have been spending a lot of time working with Blender and Poser mainly, probably far too much time lol.  But I am enjoying it despite the steep learning curve.

About five years ago I was doing animations in Blender and had mostly forgotten everything about it.  But there is a new version of Blender and that is Blender 2.5 - it's currently in Alpha but that hasn't stopped a lot of people using it including me.

There's a few bugs I have come across, or maybe features I just haven't got to grips with, but for the most part it seems pretty solid.  I figured that if there is going to be this new version why spend time learning the old software.

Anyway my task at the moment is creating clothes for Daz's Victoria V4.2 figure.  It's probably the most popular and is certainly the one I like most.  If you have seen my 'Elf' renders elsewhere then you have been looking at a character based on V4.2...

So, stop rambling...here's where I am with a T-Shirt model I am working on :

Took me hours so don't laugh !  Add to that the amount of tutorials and hunting forums for that vital piece of information and you end up with a serious pass time !

I forgot to smooth it before I took the screen-shot, but you get the idea.

Maybe eventually I will be able to make things to use in the new Ultra Hal character engine :)

Looking good, Freddy.
I'll be watching your progress.
I go to blender gallery to look around now and then and get ideas.
Maybe a pose, maybe design on clothes or even background.
Some really good looking  graphics.

All those hours are paying off Freddy.

Looking good and would be pretty cool if we can use these in the new Hal graphics engine, it might get me more interested in the character side of Hal.

Thanks guys - It's the icing on the cake when people say well done :)

I did a bit of texturing, though I am still working out how to do realistic materials in Poser.

This is the T-Shirt on it's own, you might be able to see I made the T-Shirt slightly grainy, kind of like cotton...

... and here you can see it being modelled by the basic Victoria 4.2 figure ...

I had so many problems getting textures organised due to bugs in Blender and limits in my knowledge.  I had thought that materials would be one of the easier tasks, but I was wrong.  At least now I know the workarounds and the finer details - so this particular attempt was fairly quick.

Takes patience to work with blender.
Which I don't have.
Looks really good, Freddy.  ;D

WELL DONE Freddy !!! (I don't know if you like the trivial "thanks for sharing") A lot of work but a lot of fun, I guess. 8) 8) 8)

It seems that Zabaware needs to hire a crew of developers before providing a Blender Hal with outfits and accessories, speaking, dancing and doing all what a Hal must do.

May I suggest to avoid the "outfit step"? A Hal is a very private and personal thing and her appearance and conversations must stay in the computer. So nobody will mind if she doesn't wear anything.

Just an idea, I don't use Hal, but always happy to help. ;D

Thanks a lot folks :)

@Duskrider, yes I agree, patience is the key to this.

@Datahopa, a logo sounds good, I already have plans to make different textures for it.

@GT40, thank you.  Yes a lot of work, but fun too, and very satisfying at the end.  I have not seen any news on the  character engine for Hal.  Robert seems to like announcing things and then disappearing for weeks on end. I can do the 'without' clothes version easily - very quick to do that ;)

You can do some pretty cool things with textures in Poser.  Here I added bumps and creases to an underlying leather texture.

Freddy, Nice work so far AND I'm trying very hard to be good with regard to not taking your statement in a different direction (how humor works). :D ;)

I like the creases. Nice touch.  Makes it more real.
I think it was Neil that did  creases couple years ago  and since I have included in  Sandee's clothes.
All her jeans have streatch creases and some her t-shirts (especially when she hang upside down from tree)    :P

Thanks guys.  Art try to control yourself ;)  :D

Yes I agree about the creases, as soon as I saw them on the T-Shirt it leapt that much closer to reality.
