Haptek problems in Vista
« on: February 10, 2009, 10:38:28 pm »
I've been using Haptek characters for ages and just installed Hal 6.2 in Vista with bad results, MSagents work fine fortunatly.  Since I have a dual boot computer I downloaded the files into the XP drive and installed Hal and it worked fine.  The Haptek website says the player works with XP but dose not mention Vista.
Just to check things out I double clicked the HTR in the Hal characters folder, the player window and character appear but the program becomes unresponsive when trying to move or rotate the character in the window, also it would not close in many cases.

I went to the Haptek website and downloaded their player just in case.  This is when I found they made no mention of using the player in Windows Vista.  At that time I could not get into  their forum because the server was down.   Vista has been up for quite some time and they make no mention of it, possibly they are not doing very much there.

I don't think Haptek have done a lot for quite a while now.  There was some talk of them making it Vista compatible a while back but I don't remember if that was fully fixed.  As for the forum, then I wouldn't bother, they did have Scott there offering support a few months back but then he disappeared and it's been like getting blood from a stone ever since.  I am beginning to think that Haptek won't be around much longer.  I have Windows 7 on this PC at the moment and am interested to see if it will work on here, I'll let you know.

I've put Dragon 10 in Windows XP which I am now using, I read the agreement with Dragon and did not see any restrictions on multiple use of the program but at this time I cannot activate Dragon and I am limited to five uses. I will contact them later in the day and see what happens. I had been reading through the posts at Zabaware and may have found a solution for the Haptek program in Vista. During this installation of Hal in Vista I began running into blank responses which had not happened earlier.
I am not familiar with Windows 7, I am still getting familiar with Vista, things like finding the compatibility mode.

Yes, good idea, I never thought of trying the compatibility mode.  Windows 7 is probably not that different to Vista from what I have seen so far.  The layout would be fairly familiar to you.  They've worked on the graphics again which look rather nice.  Not yet sure if it's worth the money they ask.  With M$ they can charge what they like can't they ?  Good luck with your experiments..

For anyone else, try running the exe as administrator (right click...run as) rather then letting it go on its own...usually fixes most issues.

I am able to use Dragon in both Vista and XP so that problem is solved. I have Vista ultimate and XP Pro installed in this computer, I have two other installations of XP Pro on other computers. I have not had a problem with Haptek on the XP computers or this computer. I am the administrator on both the XP computer and Vista. I had changed the compatibility mode of the Haptek player to be compatible with Windows XP which made no difference.
I have been looking in the posts and both Zabaware and AI dreams but have not come across anyone using Haptek in Vista. At this time I am planning on continuing work on ultra Hal 6.2 in the XP portion of the computer. Since the version of ultra Hal 6.2 in Vista is picking up blank responses I will probably remove it, and install ultra Hal six along with the character pack. I will also have to do this in Windows XP to be able to install the character pack. Possibly at this time I can try running Hal as the administrator.

Carl Vista can be funny with many .exe files...even if you are the admin. Security features abound, but once you know how to work round them I still like it as an OS.

As per my post above, even if you are the admin, signed in as admin, right click the exe and 'run as admin'....this usually fixes most of the isses with older apps running on Vista.

Let us know.

UltraHal and Haptek player are working fine in my Vista Ultimate load on a 64 bit laptop. I did install as admin to get them running right (it took more than one try). I have not been able to get PeoplePutty installed or wirking buy I haven't given up yet. I hope Haptek isn't giving up. I have a lot invested at this point.

Thanks for putting that in James, I am working in XP at the time and having problems using Body_female.  It worked once but has not showed up in Hals character window since.  I had problems with Haptek characters in Vista  and went to the XP OS on another partition.

I solved the problem with Body_female in XP, The desktop icon pulled up the Hal6.2 from vista and I worked on the files in XP.  Once I learned I changed the icon to the correct program and it works as planned.
The program in Vista must be okay since when pulled into XP it's okay,  Something in Vista is interfering but not showing up  in the logs.

It might be that Vista is locking a file or implementing that User Access Control garbage. I would try to reinstall it (after a backup) and see if that makes a difference. You can also look at the TaskManager to see if there's some weird process interfering with UltraHal.

Hal and dragon are both in XP and I've just finished working with blank responses from Hal, it seemed thay were caused by the freewill uhp but did not return when selecting it again,  This has been bothering me since at least ver 6.1.  I have Freddy's Hap explorer and it's working well after installing net framework 3.5.  At frist the Haptek temp folder disappeared and the program was trying to locate it so I changed the folder to read only, so that problem is gone.  I was impressed by the addition of what appeared to be the Hap registry, now it's a mater of getting the information to something that is useful  similar to what is in the Switches.  Good work Freddy.
I'll probably try reloading Hal in Vista just out of curosity using Mav's advice.
