Over the years I've seen pneumatic applications tried in a variety of products and robots as well. Some work much better than others but one thing still rings true, the energy requirements for the compressor are usually less than the combined total of motors & servos were it an electrically based system and not pneumatic.

Nice article and time will tell how successful this robot will become (or not). O0

Any thing FESTO does pretty much impress me.
I have done design work on a pneumatic data bus and address bus.
As well as a mechanical and data bus and address bus for robots and machines.
The human body has its motors spread out on all part of the body as muscle mass.
In robotics having motors will make a mobile too heavy.
So to get around this is to have a one very powerful engine and then have the power distributed to other
part of the body by pneumatics.

Wow!... Ok! the idea and the work/ skill involved... impressive... but...but... Why?

Ya godda love this planet... there is always someone doing something just because... they can.

For external data bus or address bus. Silicon chips circuits are way to dense and centralized.
I can make this on the cheap.
This stuff resonates with me because i have worked on many designs of pneumatic and mechanical bus's to
power external motors that are really far from a CPU. And as well as electrical and hybrid designs.

In one of Ian Douglas book about an alien race who up loaded them selfs, the entire population, into a computer that was made
by etching the surface of all of the natural silicon rock on the planet, with circuits, of  a millimeter thickness.

And then clocked the planet wide computer at one clock cycle per second and thous live out their lives in a simulation
to the end of time.

If i had a machine that could print or etch circuit into the surface of any machine or object, on the fly. Then i would
be very happy.

In space i would take molten silicon and blow it up into large balloons. Let it cool. Then make a access port. Then put
the mobile circuit etching machine inside to etch out a supper computer.

too bad they didn't post a walkthrough
