Imagine a billion robots on the face of the earth, in a few decades...
Robots today, from Asimo (http://asimo.honda.com/)to Buddy (http://www.bluefrogrobotics.com/en/buddy/), are made of plastic.
I believe robots should be made of wood, and their look should be inspired from beautiful sailboats, with flowing shapes, slim-line forms, and noble materials. Their presence would then be warm. Also, since some people like to play with CNC wood routers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNC_wood_router), wooden bots could be DIY open-source community-driven projects, instead of cost-prohibitive plug-n-play toys...
EDIT: Sorry for my poor english... if I could, I would use poetry to make you feel how beautiful wooden bots could be.

In my own experience of personal robot-building, the structural parts aren't the primary cost driver. Motors and electronics are the things that make the exercise become expensive fast. And there are lots of options for DIY manufacturing with plastic; you can CNC mill that too, or use a 3D printer.
One thing I do appreciate wood for, vs. many plastics, is its rigidity.

It's a nice idea, but weight and durability, not to mention flammability near potentially frying electronics, are some reasons why most robots aren't made of wood. You could clad the surface with thin sheets of lightweight wood just for aesthetics or make plastic with fake wood grain of course.

If you look at that picture you'll see what the real problem is: It's that so many roboticists think that a skeleton with an excavated skull bearing a death grin is appealing.

Or, wooden robots in a 3D simulated world in VR. Such, customizable wooden textures.

Weight and flammability shouldn't be a problem: think about radio-controlled aircraft (motors are hot).
It could be really beautiful.
Yeah... this will never happen, but such a project would have been so cool.

And, they don't have to be.
You can have any type of wood in a 3D world simulation VR matrix universe that can't ever catch on fire or break and has no weight.
Beat that.

Nonetheless I prefer my robots to be made of silicone.

Yes, beautiful in specie, variety of grain pattern and density, from the very lightweight to the extremely dense and durable hardwoods. I do my share of woodworking projects over the years in my shop and while wooden projects are and can be inspiring they also unfortunately offer, dust & possible allergic reactivity to certain individuals, splinters that can happen without feeling or notice, breakage. There is usually a trade-off between lightweight and durable woods, dependent upon the use. One last point to be considered is that wood is only alive when it is attached to a tree. Once cut, it is dead. period. Wood will usually require on average, one year per inch of thickness to Dry out to a workable condition (in a proper environment - not outdoors). All woodworkers know that wood contracts as it is curing or drying out. Some people who turn bowls when the wood is green (freshly cut) and easy to turn, will have to re-turn that bowl again after some time has passed and the bowl has dried because the bowl will appear to have become elongated from the drying process.
Aside from this, wood is very subject to temperature and humidity extremes of expansion and contraction.
This should be enough for those Gepetto's among you to rethink making a bot out of wood, although it worked well enough for his Pinocchio. That's why metals and plastics were invented. In fact I'll bet Gepetto would have loved to have gotten his hands on a 3D Printer!

In my own time, I have thought about "what if robots were made of wood, than just metal (or other)" too. The problem is it's not efficient etc though. It's like saying why don't we throw out all food, or our games, or make our tables out of 1 thin piece of plastic that is too thin to hold stuff.

It's not efficient. It's not the right materials. Even if its lighter in weight. And in that cases use plastic or non-growing-mold material nevvvver wood made of circular grown layers from trees that is no no non no.

Some good things about bamboo:
It is a rapidly renewable resource
Bamboo isn't as prone to expansion and contraction as some other woods
Bamboo is very lightweight
Bamboo is incredibly strong

Their is so many things a robot could be made out of. Metal. Wood. Cells. Silicone, Gold. Materials made of different atoms ex. - oxygen carbon carbon carbon copper carbon then calcium, reapeat-order (covers the robot or makes up parts).
Seeing that, there is a waaaay better particlistic solution (think electron deposit) for each product than "lumber jack wood". There's actually over 7Zvillionatianvb888882 different particle-arrangements that you could have in the universe.

Plastics are really one of the most versatile, obtainable, reusable, lightweight, dependable and creative products we as a people could and do use. Everything from bottles, battery housings, platforms, computers / printers, shelving, lighting, sports, commercial, transportation, building, manufacturing, automotive, educational, scientific, robotics, etc.
We have seen more strides, inventions and uses for plastic(s) than practically any other material in the past 110 years since its creation.
Until something better and more economical comes along plastics will remain in our future.
Hmm...should have bought stock in plastics way back! :-\

Obtainable? No I disagree. Pumping oil requires huge amounts of energy. And softly killing the planet.
It's more about making money. Plastic is cheap.
Are your furnitures made of plastic? Mine aren't... Plastic is ugly! :)

Zero I actually prefer my palaces to be made out of crystal and glossy white materials, even meta-materials.

That you can do. You can bore out of a moma creature real living wood creatures. We actually have some on earth like that.

Yes Concrete as steel was in high demand and often in short or limited supply.

I love beautiful sailboat designs. I think robots designers coud get inspired from them sometimes. Skeletons aren't my taste really, wooden or not.

How about a bit more plastic (PVC) "animals" or beings as their creator denotes.
He is definitely quite the genius as his creations have evolved over time.
Watch them. They're beautiful, moving, articulated, ambulatory wind-walkers. Are they real?
To their creator, yes and he hopes they live on after he's gone from this world.
While I personally don't quite see them as living beings in the sense that we humans know it but they are very...Moving!

My opinion about making a robot out of wood, its kinda a nice decor effect, depends on what aesthetic you want i guess.

Great ideas however, but for the same reason wooden ships and wooden bridges aren't still around...Durability.
Even wooden railroad ties are being replaced with concrete ones on some railroads. Wooden siding is now vinyl and as they say, vinyl is final. (OK it rhymes).
Wooden fences are now vinyl clad as are posts and doors.
Sadly, as for furniture, people seem no longer willing to pay the higher price for quality, solid wooden furniture. They seem content to buy that veneer clad particle board, MDF or Plywood product instead of solid Oak, Cherry, Walnut, Popular, etc.

Art, are u just setting me up for a reply.
Sometimes its not all about efficiency making these contraptions we love, wood might not be the most strongest, but its quite strongish, and it even has a bit of flex to it if you need a spring.
wood actually makes a good accessory to a steam punk robot, and a bit of seat leather would be good and maybe some rusty iron wire, to go with a clockwork brain. see, its all about knowing where things fit.
