Title: What did you just say?
Post by: Art on October 10, 2017, 02:25:36 pm
No more wondering or that excuse of, "It got lost in translation..."

Pixel Buds solves that (in 40 languages).

Very cool!

Is it really a good thing? Learning a language brings a lot.
Google everywhere, again and again...

But how many people can learn or have the time to learn how many languages?

You don't see this as an amazing technological application or are you just down because it's Google?

Sure learning a language is fun and rewarding but not everyone is going to need to speak in a particular language for any length of time so why bother learning it. For instance, if I go to Italy for a week, it would be nice to be able to converse to order food, get a room a taxi, etc., but after I return home I may never need to speak Italian again.

These earbuds would certainly be a huge help, then if next year I went to Sweden or Russia, I again, would not have to learn the language.

Sorry, Google doesn't float your boat but personally, I think the device is great!

I believe traveling is more about meeting people than seeing places. If you go to italy, you'll be talking to Google. Then if you go to russia, you'll be talking to Google again.

And yes, XYZ everywhere (whatever it is), is not a good thing, is it?

But that's me, and I could be wrong.

But in order to meet people, one needs to be able to communicate with them. Otherwise, all that gets done are hand gestures, pointing and drawing things on paper, in order to get the idea or message across.

This is translation on-the-fly, as it happens, in real time.

Meet anyone from anywhere and be able to communicate with them on their level. What could be any better than that?

Just my opinion.

I understand your opinion. To me, it feels like communicating by translated SMS with someone who's in front of you. There's a lot more information in pointings, drawings and smiles, than in text-to-speach. And more fun! Just my opinion ;)

This isn't the first one I have seen. but I think it's really good. Reminds me of the Babel Fish in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In the bible (I'm not religious) If I remember right it was when the tower of Babel was destroyed (they were trying to get to heaven) that all the tribes were inflicted with different languages.

Remember the early days of the net when we had the Babel translator - I see it is still there but with a 2015 copyright - I guess Google won that one.

Anyway, yeah, I don't have time to learn a lot of languages. I tried to learn Italian, but didn't get very far. I think for holiday trips this wold be great, but it does somewhat depend on both parties having the device. Maybe you could carry two with you as they are so small.
