Title: Eternal Life coming soon to a brain near you
Post by: infurl on May 06, 2018, 11:29:48 pm
https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-have-reanimated-disembodied-pigs-brains-but-for-a-human-mind-it-could-be-a-living-hell

So, it seems that eternal life is technically possible now, but you might not want it.

Apparently, that author has never seen an episode of Futurama with those shelves full of heads in jars...talking, seeing, hearing heads, not just thinking. After all, it is a head in a jar.
Some scientists have stated that when a person is decapitated, their head usually remains conscious for at least 20 seconds before, I suppose, lack of blood or oxygen (both) causes the brain to black out.

Nope....not for me thanks. I think one lifetime is enough...
Ask as soon as I'm about to die. I might have a different answer then. O0

I'll take it. I want eternity.

Nothing they did here is equivalent to "eternal life."

In the first place, they say the brains didn't regain consciousness.  (Not sure how they think they can tell, but maybe they mean there was no high-level brain activity.)  If they're not conscious, then they aren't "alive" in any sense that matters to the beings who once possessed them.

In the second place, reviving something that's been killed, while impressive, is not eternal life -- it's just premature death avoidance.  Eternal life would require preventing the effects of aging, and they haven't demonstrated they can do that.

Edit: typo fix

@Art, wait, I've never asked someone this question. What would you be feeling like if you Art were young at 25 years old for eternity in a very-nice eternal Utopian center/'Earth' in space never in pain or death modes and only in life and happy modes? What is this terrible "feeling" that you're saying you'd get after 200 years? You say you don't want eternity. How do you know you'd get this "feeling" anyhow? And what if it's all in your head? Were you born thinking you don't want to live on? No...

Is this "feeling" like that you've completed your life and don't want eternity? But but...but..don't you like eating breakfast dude?

When you complete a game 100%, you usually don't want to play it again (if you have the memories). BUT, there is ALWAYS game #2. There's more than 1 game.

Lock, my friend,  I have walked and traveled in places where you have yet begun to tread. Until you have, please don't pass judgment against me or others who have likewise made similar journies.

Part of it is the stark realization that even though all things age, it is those living things that realize and feel the aging process the most. Those "Feelings" to which you've alluded are very real and always present. They are the constantly nagging reminders of what some have and others will soon have. Pain...aches, muscles, bones, eyes, hearing and basically, growing old/aging. You'll see...

Don't worry, enjoy the time of your youth as carefree as it might now seem. For one day you too will understand what I've said. While I wish for you a long and happy life, there are no guarantees and eventually, time catches up with all of us, yes, even with those other Ray Kurzweil types hoping to be immoral by not dying. Yeah...that's worked out pretty good so far.

Good luck with your quest. O0

ME         ANGRYYYYY

DO YOU KNOW WHY ME ANGRYYY?

RRRRRRR HULK ANGRYYYY!!!!!

78 years and still no progress here. This is because of ethical BS.

My friend Mark once laughed over email, when I told him they should use all the dying/dead heads as tests for either the head transplant or trying to keep the head alive or cryonics.

Art, are you saying your problem with immortality is growing old pains? That can be fixed tho dude...

Locksuit you would have loved Nazi Germany. They had no stupid qualms about experimenting on live subjects. They would have made huge progress if the rest of the world hadn't stopped them. And the best bit is that being disabled, you'd have had a front row seat.

It's for the people. The ones that still have a chance.

Some scientists have recently indicated that they feel that it is entirely possible to transplant a head from one body to another. While a very lengthy operation, they say it could certainly be done if such operations weren't illegal at present.

@ infurl...you do realize what you've just said don't you? "...rest of the world..."?

Lock,
Stopping or rather "masking" the pain does nothing to stop the aging process.
All living things grow old and die, it is as much a part of life as birth. The final chapter.

Don't get me wrong. I love life. I enjoy each day that I'm able to awaken and go about taking care of things.
But those other things I mentioned are unfortunately inevitable and everyone will get a turn eventually.

I have no death wish at all and would love to live to be 200, without pain or other maladies of aging but logically it isn't so.

Drugs stop the pain but the physical body will shut down and begin failing.

But enough of that. Let's make the best of each day.

Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. O0

Those kinds of experiments are sick, and those scientists are sick idiots. If they want to contribute to the science, let them contribute their own brains for experiments. What, it's for greater good, I'm sure they'd have nothing against it.

 :uglystupid2: :uglystupid2: :uglystupid2:

Sick.

Poor pig, like death isn't enough.

Art, you know that in 5,000 years, death for humans will no longer be necessary for sure, right?

Well great :P....so you want 200 years, and more! Just you think repair is impossible. Well you're in luck in your dream, because repair is possible and will come....however I hope you make it, you are old sadly. Cryonics exists though! It won't hurt!

If you really think about it, neither will the actual moment of death. Again, no death wish for me...saw the movie years ago.  :2funny:
