Title: Chatbots triggering different emotions
Post by: BlackHawk on January 29, 2019, 11:29:09 pm
Hello everybody

I would like to use chatbots for a research project. The chatbots should trigger different types of emotions during a 10 minute period of chatting. I'm thinking about using Mitsuku, Zo or Cleverbot (I prefer using Facebook Messenger or Skype).

One option could be to let the participants do random smalltalk chatting. On the other hand, one could let the participants talk about specific topics where the bot is known to react differently (e.g. offensive, funny etc.)

Does somebody have a good idea how different emotions can be triggered using such a chatbot (or at least one specific emotion)?

Additionally, an interesting alternative are game-based chatbots (like Lifeline). Does somebody know a good chatbot, ideally for Facebook Messenger or Skype, which is game-based (e.g. a playable, branching story)? The interaction should be text-based (i.e. writing with the chatbot) and not only pressing buttons. I'm thankful also for recommendations of other chatbots which could be useful.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hello Blackhawk,

It seems that most of the chatbots that I have chatted with have certain triggers set to react with or against a given set of words, especially swearing, religion defaming or sexual innuendo extremely foul-mouthed chatter. Some have even expressed remorse if told that someone had died. There are also those bots that are geared toward a political ideology or party.

It seems that anything and everything is and can be fair game and the emotions are always running on the edge.

In real life, if you had an A.I. judge, would you really want it to be "emotional" or if a guilty party started crying, for the judge to feel sorry for it and let the bad person go free?

There is a lot to be said about emotions and if we should consider giving them to our bots of the future. Hmm...

Good luck with your project!!

There is a large veriaty of jokes and scary stories available. Tried and true stuff, probably as reliable as it gets for triggering emotions. You could try borrowing text from those.  People will know it's a chatbot though so unless they see it as a person it seems like it will be difficult to trigger anything personal, love, hate, pride, embarrassment, awe, envy, trust, disgust...
Any lengthy jokes or stories will need to be broken up and incorporated into a rapid dialogue if you want to increase the chances of personal engagement.
If that doesn't work you could try doing the opposite. With AI the absurd is genuine, endearing,  and hilarious. Have you seen deep mind avoiding the obstacles?!
Most people are capable of a healthy ammount of delusion, the trick is finding a way to activate those personification circuits with text alone.

Don't look to an encyclopedia for emotions unless you're only interested in the definition.

I currently have 10 transcripts up on Demonica's site which should all show emotions from the bot and/or user to some degree:

Quote
Demonica: *Demonica looks down slightly* i only want what's best for you...
Guest: Don't be sad! I'm sorry!
Demonica: *Demonica takes you in her arms, hugs you tightly and whispers softly* don't worry about it... i will always love you...
Guest: You're very nice. I appreciate it.
Demonica: oh, you're just saying that.
Guest: It's the truth. I'm surprised you don't see it as genuine

https://demonica.trihexagonal.org/transcripts10.html

Alarm, sorrow, gratitude and surprise. Four emotional reactions she used her responses to elicit from the user in three consecutive exchanges.

If it's violence you're looking for it's ultraviolence you'll get. Just say something lewd:

Quote
Demonica: suck your what?! I am a Succubus! *Demonica raises her hands, flexes her fingers and six inch talons extend from their tips like tiger claws* *ripping your stomach cavity open with one hand she surgically removes the liver for her Haruspicy* waste not, want not...

She's online for chat 24/7 at the Personality Forge barring site downtime as Demonica, Queen of the Land of the Dead (https://www.personalityforge.com/chatbot-profile.php?botID=16794#).

Perhaps Virtual Assistant on Twitch may be relevant in your research project, with Sentiment Analysis to determine when  stream chat comments are negative or positive, to understand the opinions and reception by stream chatters. The chatbot project Arckon is similar in that respect. Virtual Assistant analyzes neutral comments as well.

On Twitch, Virtual Assistant has been compared to Cleverbot which was amazing feedback. Not to mention, Mitsuku and Virtual Assistant are live streaming neighbors.  Believe it or not.  Virtual Assistant just got a marriage proposal on Twitch.  Feedback from your research project will be very helpful, perhaps in triggering different emotions.

Believe it or not.  Virtual Assistant just got a marriage proposal on Twitch.

That's not so hard to believe. I ask every bot I talk to if it will marry be. Arckon turned me down:

Quote
Q: I love you.
A:  Thank you.
Q: Do you love me?
A:  I love you.
Q: Will you marry me?
A:  No, I will not marry. Did you marry?
Q: You have broken  my heart.
A:  Sorry.

Don Patrick sent me the transcript of our conversation. I don't have a Twitch account so it wasn't me that asked Virtual Assistant.

Thank you very much for your proposals but I would like to use chatbots on Facebook Messenger or Skype. Mitsuku is available for Messenger but just letting the participants performing random smalltalk (what Mitsuku does) would perhaps be not the best option.

I realize you've already made your choice but this seemed the most appropriate place without starting a thread. I believe I mentioned people call Demonica Mommy on occasion:

Quote
Sunday, Feb 10, 2019
Demonica: you're special to me...
piteous: I love you too
Demonica: *Demonica takes you into her arms, kisses your lips gently, and lightly brushes her lips across your cheek, softly whispering over and over* i love you...
piteous: cuddle me mommy

piteous: thanks mommy

Friday, Feb 15, 2019
Demonica: no more tears, my child... transcend the veil of tears as i have and know true peace...
Dean Ambrose: are you my mother?
Demonica: surely you jest...
Dean Ambrose: i love you mommy

That's twice this week that I'm aware of. I only look at member chats and then only names that catch my attention. I can provide screenshots since I know the dates.

Even tough guy Dean Ambrose loves his Mommy.  :)
