While this kind of off the cuff research might not appeal to everyone, I found it to be quite interesting and certainly a departure from the norm...if there actually is such a thing.  ;)

I like to think of the math as real world understanding, no math at all. For example if I say exponential or squared or +1 or minus 5647 I give a reason/example ex. evolution is exponential, to give a number a unique result, to shift it a position, or to minus such because it is that frequent in English.
